Y'all got me kind of freaked out that the only mildly cool things I'm doing are centered around music.

i want to play music soooo bad, as soon as i'm not 100% consumed with work and school, my first goal is to get back into drum lessons. I can't wait! what are you up to music wise?

I'm still doing the roller derby referee thang and it's pretty awesome. Every weekend except July 4th from now until mid-August is booked with some kind of derby thing that I get to referee! I have a tournament in West Virginia coming up this weekend that I'm stoked on.

I'm back in Asheville and have been busy staring at mountains and counting my blessings for being amongst them again.

I started making my own facial clay mask and trying to get the perfect blend of essential oils, apple cider vinegar, and clay so that it smells good and is also okay for my skin.

I interviewed for a job at a local kombucha brewery that I'm reallllllllly hoping I get so I can tell my shady-ass company goodbye. Bonus points for getting to be around kombucha for most of the week!

dude how is asheville? i've been getting sooooo homesick lately. please tell me it sucks!

General / Re: anyone actually see the new mad max?
June 14, 2015, 01:03:34 PM
Late to this thread but I saw it twice, and really liked it. I think seeing it a second time made me like it more, because it wasn't as stressful and I was able to enjoy more of the spectacle and story. I really like the whole mythology around the making of the movie. I wasn't really emotionally attached to originals, having only seen them within the past few months, and definitely found them...not that interesting? Just one of the many movies along this lines where I'm just like, as a woman this is clearly not made for me? The new Mad Max didn't feel that way at all, which was fucking awesome.

I'm in tattoo school right now and about to start the apprenticing/actually DOING tattoo phase, in about a month and a half. So basically I'm learning a lot about technique, application, machines, and lots and lots and lots of sanitation and infection control type stuff. It's pretty awesome to me, and the start of the most exciting career I can imagine. But more in response to your actual question, there is sooo much drawing and preparation for the apprenticeship phase because it's the first opportunity to build your tattoo portfolio, which are the most important for getting a new job out of school. Yadda yadda, basically I'm spending all my free time making flash sheets so people get an idea of my style and let me design them stuff that will fit in my portfolio so I don't have to do little script and infinity symbol and butterfly walk-ins for my first 50. So yeah! Currently busting my ass to build up a tattoo flash portfolio.

ps. I know this board isn't full of intense judgmental punx like it used to be, but for those who may be thinking "tattoo school, aren't those kinda bullshit/not legit?" yeah, most everywhere they are (especially if they're online only, boy howdy!) but in Oregon, a formal trade school type program is required to get a license, and my school is the most strenuous in the state. Just imagine one part Art school, one part sales/marketing school, one part how to not give everyone Hep C, etc. It is cray.

The Vietnamese character is way more offensive/problematic than the native American storyline

I was just thinking this today! So true.

After seeing more episodes that actually had the native story line, i wasn't offended and i dont think the portrayal was offensive. I GET the argument of why not have a native actress play the role but i don't really think it would actually suit the role? the whole point is how embarassing white people are.... and what's her name is perfect for that. (I just re-read becca's response that it is basically exactly what you said, like a week ago). Anyway, I'm still enjoying the show...but yeah, Dong is way more offensive!

uhhh i just meant like on a personal level it sounds wonky to me, not like oh hey i'm a superior person because i know the right and true Proper English College Educated way to speak. As someone who is always quick to step in when people talk down to anyone with a Southern accent/dialect AND someone who's personal speech patterns/dialect/vernacular is condescended to on a regular basis (just like i'm pretty sure probably everyone woman on this board/in our generation has been annoyingly called a valley girl) that is definitely not what I meant. It's just like how i hate the word "toothbrushes" because it sounds weird...teethbrush? Anyway, just wanted to clear that up.

along those same lines, i hate when people leave "to be" out of descriptions of things that needs to be done, like when they say "this needs folded" instead of "this needs to be folded". what IS that??

whit, would it be your first time going to therapy?

if not, you probs know your limit or how it would benefit. but if it IS your first time, i say 100% do it. therapy is the shit if you can afford it (and find a good therapist).

++++ had my first weekend of tattoo school! 16 hrs down, 584 to go....

Lindsey, have you been hanging out on offbeat bride or a practical wedding yet?

I've browsed offbeat a little bit, but I've never heard of practical wedding! I will definitely check it out. I'm trying to have the smallest/cheapest wedding possible while still trying to wrangle my loved ones from the east coast... Becca you're actually a great person to ask, you probably had a lot of people coming from across the country...how involved were you in helping with their travel/accommodations? It's already stressing me out so much to think about dealing with out of town guests/family (all of whom have never been to portland and aren't regular travelers either) AND dealing w the wedding... any suggestions?
