Has anyone tried these? I just had the ginger one today and was really underwhelmed by it. It boasted "More Ginger! Less Sweet!" annnnnd it just tasted like watered down unsweetened ginger ale. I have three more bottles, so maybe it'll get better.

A store near my house just started carrying these.  I tried the Kola and was pretty unimpressed; although I like most all of the ingredients listed, it had an almost sorghum or molasses aftertaste that I couldn't get past.  I guess I'm just not a big fan of agave sweetened sodas.

World Market soda clearance is great.  I got a bunch of my favorites for 17 cents each last time the store close to me ran one.  WM is pretty cool because they change their soda selection every quarter or so.  It's actually probably time for them to switch it up within the next few weeks.

Also, that mint julep soda is delicious.  It sounded really weird, and the label art kinda stinks, but it's really tasty.  Next time you're in a WM I'd recommend trying some of Swamp Pop's stuff.  The best one is the cucumber ginger ale.  It burns then cools itself.

Hey kw and / or bee, ever try Tommyknocker Root Beer?  I picked one up on a whim while I was on tour, and it's one of the most unique RBs I've tried yet.  Flavored with pure cane sugar AND maple syrup.  It was like pancake root beer.

Also, currently sipping my first Fentimans Rose Lemonade.  Delicious!  For some reason, I guess the tartness, it makes me think of a really good grapefruit soda.

Has anyone here ever played Munchkin?  I played it for the first time a couple years ago, and it was so much fun!  Still need to get around to buying it myself, though.

When I was 13 I played rec. league baseball (all-star centerfielder, hot dang!), started getting into punk (Fat Wreck, Epitaph stuff), and read a lot of books.  That's pretty much it.

I liked "Word Crimes" from the perspective of a copy editor, but it can definitely be problematic in terms of valuing dialects and home languages.  By setting a standard for "proper English," "Word Crimes" brings a lot of questions to rise, such as the complex relationships between education and class, race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, etc.

Coming from the perspective of a former ESL teacher, I did find that the song automatically puts native-English speakers on a pedestal.  By the song's standards, English Language Learners shouldn't even attempt to string together sentences or phrases unless they want to be seen as inferior or face ridicule from their English-speaking peers.

Another gripe, most of the stuff in the song isn't even "grammar" as Al seems to imply pretty early on.

All of this being said, I think it's a good parody as long as it's seen as just that.  I think Al did a good job of turning a terribly misogynistic song into something a little more playful, and I've actually seen a lot of people posting things about that.  While it does address some common spelling and syntax issues, "Word Crimes" probably shouldn't be used as a teaching tool, unless presented as a fun accompaniment piece and not the law.

I've always been an Al fan, even though I thought the last couple albums didn't really stack up. Stoked on these videos and their popularity, though. "Word Crimes" is definitely a favorite so far, although the second verse of "Foil" is Al at his finest.

Was pretty disappointed with today's song though ("Sports").

Has anyone here tried any of the Fentimans sodas?

I HATED the first one I had because I was just expecting a casual Coca-Cola-esque soda, but now I love 'em.  Very hearty, intricate flavors.

It mainly just tastes like black cherry, and I want to eat it instead of just chewing it.

Yeah, I guess I should have phrased that differently.  It's available nearly everywhere, just owned by a Detroit company, I think.

Oh, Vernors.  It's more weird to me than anything.  I don't think I like it, but deep down I kind of know of do.  It's like a creamy ginger ale.  Very strange.

Rory (and anyone else from Michigan), what are your thoughts on Towne Club, if you've had it?  TC Peach was one of the first sodas that inspired me to dedicate a pretty big chunk of tour time to finding local sodas in the cities we played in.

Frostie is also a Michigan thing, right?

Yeah!  The canned version was still made with real sugar, but I'm after the bottled version for sure.

Awwww yeah!  The store I went to was all out of Thums Up when I went, but I'm hoping they'll be restocked by the next time I head back.

Yeah.  It's definitely disgusting.  As far as champagne kola goes, it's right up there with the rest, though.

TELL ME MORE

Limca is a lemon lime soda that Coke bought the rights to back in the 90s.  It reminds me of a better, more flavorful version of Sprite or 7UP in which you can actually taste both the lemon and lime flavors, and pretty strongly at that.  If you ever see it and are into that sort of thing, I'd recommend it.  I usually skip lemon lime sodas because the flavors are almost always weak, but this one is pretty unique.

Interesting fact: Limca publishes their own India-specific book of world records, ala the Guinness Book.

Another Indian soda that Coke bought the rights to, to keep Pepsi from doing so first, is Thums Up.  It's a cola with a punch of ginger!

I tried my first ginger beer today! I really enjoy the flavor, the slight spiciness makes my tongue very happy!

What'd ya have?  Some of my favorite ginger drinks are Buffalo Rock Ginger Ale, Maine Root Ginger Brew, Gosling's Ginger Beer, Trader Joe's Triple Ginger Brew, and Swamp Pop Jean Lafitte Ginger Ale.

Honorable mention goes to Goya Jamaican Ginger Beer, Bundaberg Ginger Beer, Ale-8-One, Royalty Ginger Beer, and Red Rock Golden Ginger Ale.

Uck.  I hate champagne kolas.  Too bubblegummy.  If you're into that flavor, though, give Big Red a look.
