General / Netflix Dave Chappelle specials
March 30, 2017, 06:43:57 PM
As I was watching the latest Dave Chappelle specials, it occurred to me that there probably would be some controversy. I have seen some feedback where people have spoken about one or both of the specials being offensive, especially to members of the LGBTQ community and supporters. What did you guys think about the material? I wanted to make a poll but it ended up sounding awkward. I decided to leave it up so feel free to vote and share your thoughts.

I don't think the word keeps people interested in politics. I think it's just a way of describing people who are socially aware, which is great. It's just way overused.
"Look at this woke toddler, guys!"
Like it just seems like a parody of itself now because people say it 50 times a day.
It is also used by right wing nuts to describe being aware of the vast conspiracies that liberals have enacted through the years. I also hate the term "red pill" which is used in the same context.

On the non-political front, using the word "right?" a lot is irritating. Oh, and when people say "F-ing" or "F" instead of just saying "fucking" or "fuck". If you're around children I feel like there's not a lot if any difference between using one as opposed to the other so just come up with another word to use. If it's being used without children present it's even more puzzling.

Having a preteen in the house, I completely agree.

I haven't "beta male" often but it was instantly irritating when I did hear it.

General / Words and phrases I'm sick of hearing
March 22, 2017, 07:39:08 PM
During the past year I have watched a lot of people do news and opinion online. There's a lot of diversity in what I watch but there are certain words and phrases that I began hearing a little over a year ago and I'm just tired of hearing them. Please feel free to add the ones that you are sick of hearing.

The number 1 word on my list is "cuck". The other ones are in no particular order but I had to single "cuck" out because it is defitely the word I'm most sick of hearing/reading.

Social justice warrior or SJW, regressive, marketplace of ideas, classical liberal (as a code word for libertarian), snowflake, woke

Here are a few  bonus acronyms/abbreviations: MGTOW, MRA, AnCap

I'm sure there are more that I can't think of right now.

With punk being anti-establishment in nature it makes me wonder if the swing right that you and I referred to will swing back left the longer a Republican is in the White House. I may be wrong about everything in this thread, I'm just thinking out loud.

Awful. It's hard to believe we're going down this same road again.

And when are people going to give up on The Exploited? They've had the soft on nazis/ sympathizer accusations for decades.
I feel like there will always be an element within punk that is at the very least passive when it comes to nazi imagery and sentiments. It's disturbing and strange. I always thought it was a shock value kind of deal but with the skinhead trend it seemed to me like there was and is a portion of punk fans who share values with nazis. I may be talking out of my ass but it seemed that even those who claimed to be "the good skinheads" often held private views that were sympathetic to nazi skinheads. That's just anecdotal though.

I could totally see skinheads heading further right in the Trump/alt right era.

I've been listening to a lot of covers of classic songs by female musicians. Here's a good one

https://youtu.be/UoYoWsKWQcE

I may get some shit for the song choice but I love her passion in this one

https://youtu.be/SHEMVvbscrw

Damn this one is really good

https://youtu.be/8dJeFcoR6AY

Her other covers are great too. Another good musician is Jenn Fiorentino. You guys should check them both out.

Sublime were awesome and no one will ever convince me otherwise. I never got into Frank Turner but hearing the bashing makes me want to check out how terrible it is.

outlaw country gg is real good..

I wouldn't use the words "real good" to describe it but it isn't as terrible as his other stuff. The older video Don't Talk to Me was better than I thought it would be when I hit play so that's something.

I like a lot of Pearl Jam from the 90s and I like Pink Floyd. I don't understand how someone who has taken acid or shrooms (especially acid) could not like Pink Floyd.

Korn had a couple of okay albums back in the day but I can't listen to most of it now without rolling my eyes. Blind is still a good song.

I am guilty of owning quite a few nu metal albums back in the day but I understand that most of it was terrible in retrospect. Having said that, I'd rather listen to Papa Roach than GG Allin

I'm on board with Brett's idea and will agree The Smiths are terrible.

I know I'll get push back from Ryan but G.G. Allin is atrocious

It's been a week since the last post. I need to take this page off my favorite bar in my browser, so I stop checking it everyday. It was fun, but all good things must come to an end.

Don't leave! We need you. Here I'll start some controversy to get the board going. Feminism is cancer! All lives matter! Not all men! You all are just a bunch of social justice warrior libtards! Trump is already the best president of all time! Obama is a communist and was born in Kenya!

Wait, did anybody shoot down Beck?

What about The Rolling Stones?

Don't like the rolling stones, Beck I can get behind. While I don't listen to him much, I certainly understand his appeal.

Back to punk bands though one I think we may have overlooked would be Refused.
Well Refused were great so I'm on board

I can't possibly allow Blink 182 to be placed above Green Day. I can see why someone younger may do so but I just can't go there.

Is Wu Tang the FRNTRNNR now?
I doubt it. This thread is not going to have a neat resolution. I thought about making a poll to see which band with a lot of mentions wins and ending the thread that way. It kind of defeats the purpose though since it won't be a band we all agree on. If we could get to 90% I think that's a success

I'd be on board with Beck.

I haven't listened to much Taylor Swift but am sure I've probably heard her while in the car with my stepdaughter listening to pop stations

Rage Against the Machine for the win but I'm going to have to listen to more Run the Jewels

EDIT the first youtube clip I posted was garbage just start here.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NUC2EQvdzmY

Then listen to RTJ3 and work your way backwards to RTJ2 and RTJ if you like it. If not, unlock the thread.
I really appreciate the video and like the song but I feel like Wu Tang Clan are better. I feel like all of the rap artists I've named are better than Run the Jewels. Clipse is great. 2pac, Biggie, Nas, Jay-Z, Eminem, Kurupt, Ice Cube, Snoop Dogg, etc. All better. Immortal Technique is another underrated rapper, though he needs to put out more material. Dead Prez is another good group.

I do really like this video and am downloading some of their stuff now so that's a win for this thread in my opinion. Thanks!

Probably for the best. I thought we had it nailed with Jawbreaker but Brett swooped in and smacked the rubber stamp out of Jer's hand at the last second.

I keep saying it and no one will confirm or deny Propagandhi. Doesn't everyone here love at least one Propagandhi album?

ramones?
I covered this and I may be the person holding out on the Ramones. All I said was that while I appreciate the fact that they are very influential, I prefer a shitload of Ramones style bands to the actual Ramones.

Wu Tang gets my vote. I'm listening to Michael Jackson right now. Anyone like Michael Jackson? Prince?

I agree this seems like it could be the best menzingers album to date.
I think the new album is great but I could see where it may be a little too polished for some.

Sorry, I regret to inform you Jawbreaker doesn't win.

I've been trying very hard not to make this post.
Well, shit. Who well I don't know who else to crown. Let's go classics. Does everyone like Jimi Hendrix? Johnny Cash?

I was going to back to rap and ask about Public Enemy or Rakim. I feel like other rappers can't get the seal of approval due to violence, sexism, and homophobia. Outkast are great but the aforementioned complaints might hold them back. I don't think they're too bad as far as that stuff goes compared to their other rappers from their era.

I think we should just crown Defiance, Ohio until KW tells us otherwise. I would also be open to giving the crown to Propagandhi just because they're great and I thought everyone liked them.
