I was going to post this on FB but reasons I can't or rather won't relate to why I'm making this post. I went to a dentist and oral surgeon today and both places offered me narcotic painkillers and both times I had to explain why I can't take them. I'm initially met with confusion and then "the look". It's a very judgmental look followed by shortness and sometimes by suppressed disgust. I really hate it. That's all.

General / Harvey Weinstein
October 10, 2017, 05:29:11 PM
I just got online and started looking at recent news and saw the story about newly outed (at least to my knowledge) sexual assaulter, Harvey Weinstein. I guess what pisses me off almost as the act itself is the knowledge that this has surely been relatively well known in Hollywood and his coworkers who are acting outraged now have most likely been helping him keep a kid on this for years. Of course I don't know that for a fact but given how most of these cases go, I'll bet it's the case. I really hope that I could say that if I were in a similar position I'd do something more than perhaps scold the person behind closed doors. I guess one never knows unless they're in that position though. I need to read about how all of this came to the public's attention.

EDIT: I saw this on Wikipedia and thought it was interesting  "In September 2009, Weinstein publicly voiced opposition to efforts to extradite Roman Polanski from Switzerland to the U.S. regarding a 1977 charge that he had drugged and raped a 13-year-old, to which Polanski had pleaded guilty before fleeing the country. Weinstein, whose company had distributed a film about the Polanski case, questioned whether Polanski committed any crime, prompting Los Angeles County District Attorney Steve Cooley to insist that Polanski's guilty plea indicated that his action was a crime, and that several other serious charges were pending."

General / Worst Month Ever
September 29, 2017, 06:06:19 PM
So September is almost over and I am pretty sure it's the worst month me and my family (specifically members of my household) have ever had.

I won't go into too much detail but my stepdaughter has been having a really tough month and the things she has done and things she is going through have been equally hard on me and her mom.

My daughter's eating has been a source of anxiety for quite a while as she spits up A LOT. We finally got it somewhat under control by buying the more expensive premixed formula but this week she's has fevers off and on and has been fussy. Turns out she has Hand, Foot, and Mouth disease which isn't serious but is stressful in the midst of everything else.

This past Monday we found out my wife has melanoma skin cancer and a rare, very serious form at that. We have to go 3 counties over to find a doctor who specializes in it. We will find out more on Monday.

My wife and stepdaughter are at the ER right now trying to find out why my stepdaughter has had a migraine for 2 days and no energy. This has been the least of her problems this month though.

Addy finally fell asleep after eating and being very fussy and I just had a moment to reflect. We had to replace our dishwasher which was a nightmare and before that we had a leak under the upstairs sink which caused water to drip on our ceiling. The ceiling was a $400, week and a half ordeal. Those last two things are the least of our worries but it has all added up. Oh and TMI but I've had hemorrhoids all month. Yay!

I am worried about my stepdaughter and even more so about my wife. I feel like I am under as much stress as I can handle and I can only imagine how hard this is for my wife. I have to be very positive but I'm actually very scared and worried.

General / Help me and my wife watch It?
September 16, 2017, 05:19:13 PM
We can't find a sitter and we really want to watch It. All of the torrent sites I used to go to are gone. Can someone please help us watch It? Streaming or torrents are fine.

General / Adelie's Top 5 Musicians/Bands
August 17, 2017, 05:28:04 AM
So I know a dude always talking about his baby can be annoying but my daughter, Adelie, loves music but she doesn't like just any music. It can be fast but it can't be too abrasive which means that while she definitely has a Nirvana onesie as well as a Nirvana hoodie, she's not a big fan yet. After trying different bands or singers, these are her favorites.

1. Elvis Presley (favorite song is "I can't help falling in love")
2. The Beatles (can't tell what her favorite song is of the Beatles but I can tell you that unlike her dad, Addy prefers early Beatles. They were playing the Beatles when she was delivered. We chose it because they asked what we wanted playing and it was one of the choices)
3. Michael Jackson (was almost #2 but while she really likes Michael Jackson, it's only a few songs that she really digs while with the Beatles I can play it for a long time and she's fine with it. Favorite song is "Rock with you".)
4. The Beach Boys (favorite song is "God only knows")
5. Jimi Hendrix (very weird but she seems to like a lot of Jimi Hendrix despite it being a little harder than her usual tastes. There's no favorite song that I can tell).

***Very honorable mention: whoever sings the Winni the Pooh theme songs from the movie from the 70s as well as the new adventures of Pooh from the 90s.

Amanda and I do play more kid oriented songs that we find online but I thought it would be fun to make a top 5 list of bands that we can both somewhat enjoy.

General / Happy Birthday to Becca!
July 30, 2017, 06:24:55 AM
I just wanted to take a minute to say happy birthday to Becca. I can't stress how much respect I have for her and how good of a person I think she is. Becca has always actively tried to help anyone on the board who is having problems and she was a great source of emotional support when I was going through a tough time with my wife and daughter in the hospital last month. Becca even came up with the first name of my daughter. I thinks it's pretty damn cool that someone can have such a positive impact on people that they've never met in person. Thank you Becca and I hope you have a great birthday.

General / Top 5 grunge bands
May 24, 2017, 05:04:40 PM
So I was watching top 10 lists on YouTube and they gave their top 10 greatest grunge bands. Now I'm not delusional enough to actually think there are 10 great grunge bands to begin with but there are 5 and I thought the order was more or less pretty good.

This is what they had for their top 5 and I think I agree if the emphasis is on grunge. If we are just ranking these 5 based on which of them is best I believe I'd flip Alice In Chains and Soungarden.

5. Stone Temple Pilots
4. Soundgarden
3. Pearl Jam
2. Alice In Chains
1. Nirvana

General / Funniest Movies
April 01, 2017, 07:50:22 PM
I was watching movies with my wife today and got to thinking about which 5 movies I think are the funniest. It is really hard for me to come up with a list without second guessing myself. I can't order them but off the top of my head here are 5 in no particular order: Blazing Saddles, Tropic Thunder, Walk Hard, Anchorman, and Borat. It's so subjective and I'm curious what others will say.

General / Netflix Dave Chappelle specials
March 30, 2017, 06:43:57 PM
As I was watching the latest Dave Chappelle specials, it occurred to me that there probably would be some controversy. I have seen some feedback where people have spoken about one or both of the specials being offensive, especially to members of the LGBTQ community and supporters. What did you guys think about the material? I wanted to make a poll but it ended up sounding awkward. I decided to leave it up so feel free to vote and share your thoughts.

General / Words and phrases I'm sick of hearing
March 22, 2017, 07:39:08 PM
During the past year I have watched a lot of people do news and opinion online. There's a lot of diversity in what I watch but there are certain words and phrases that I began hearing a little over a year ago and I'm just tired of hearing them. Please feel free to add the ones that you are sick of hearing.

The number 1 word on my list is "cuck". The other ones are in no particular order but I had to single "cuck" out because it is defitely the word I'm most sick of hearing/reading.

Social justice warrior or SJW, regressive, marketplace of ideas, classical liberal (as a code word for libertarian), snowflake, woke

Here are a few  bonus acronyms/abbreviations: MGTOW, MRA, AnCap

I'm sure there are more that I can't think of right now.

I'm on board with Brett's idea and will agree The Smiths are terrible.

I know I'll get push back from Ryan but G.G. Allin is atrocious

General / Band that we can all agree are great
February 01, 2017, 06:19:01 PM
I was listening to music today and ended up listening to a lot of Bad Religion. When doing so I wondered, is there anyone who is into punk and doesn't think Bad Religion is great? I mean we can all disagree as to which album is their best and worst and if/when they stopped putting out great music but does anyone question their greatness? I thought they might be the only band who we can agree are not overrated. Of course I could be wrong. Thoughts? Can anyone think of another band we can all agree is or was great?

I remember the first time I saw them live and they were fantastic despite being well into their 40s at the time. It's one of the two or three times I've been star struck. The only time I can remember being more in awe of a band is in 2000 when I saw Green Day and was right up against the front of the stage at the Warped Tour. The 2000 Warped Tour was the best.

General / Quitting smoking
October 30, 2016, 07:51:30 AM
Throughout my life there have been a lot of substances that I've quit using but I have never been able to quit smoking. I started when I was 13 to fit in with my cousin and his friends who were a little older than me. I've been smoking cigarettes ever since and currently smoke about 3/4 to 1 pack a day depending on what's going on. When I was a kid, I always said that I would quit when I was 30 (assuming I made it that long. I was pretty depressed and pessimistic about my life when I was younger). The last time I tried to quit was about 9 years ago and I got to where I would only smoke 2 cigarettes a day; one in the morning and one at night.

I've had various health problems due to my smoking, mainly chronic bronchitis but have also been told that my sleep apnea has been made worse by smoking. Now that my wife is pregnant, I've felt very panicky about my health and really want to quit smoking. I finished the pack I had yesterday morning and bought an electronic cigarette to help transition me from smoker to non-smoker. I have no idea if this will work and don't really have a plan for transitioning to nothing. I do know that this electronic cigarette sucks and is the equivalent of drinking Coke Zero after drinking regular Coke.

Has anyone here been a heavy smoker and successfully quit? Any tips would be greatly appreciated. I really don't want to be a smoker when the baby is born.

General / Random thoughts and questions
August 10, 2016, 05:58:21 PM
I don't know what made me think of this but why hasn't a punk band ever named their major label debut "30 Pieces of Silver" or some variant. Maybe change it to "For 30 Pieces of Silver...". I think it would be a good tongue in cheek title.

General / Alex Jones
June 26, 2016, 07:27:23 AM
I know that as soon as anyone sees the subject line they will roll their eyes and rightfully so. I used to occasionally watch his YouTube videos about 10 years ago and thought there could be some truth in some of his theories. I, like most people who watch his videos for very long, quit watching after realizing that he is nuts. I stumbled across some of his videos at some point about 6 months ago and boy if I thought he was nuts in 2006/2007 he is REALLY off the deep end now. It's like watching a parody of a conspiracy theorist. He's selling these weird male vitality supplements, prepper supplies, and other snake oils. I also noticed that he now goes on and on about being a Christian. This really took me by surprise due to the fact that he never talked about his religion in the past. I don't know how he isn't called out for thinking/saying that nearly every major shooting in the US is a hoax, 9/11 was a false flag operation, FEMA is building concentration camps, etc. while at the same time professing beliefs for religion which seems to me like it would be an obvious, easy target for skepticism.

My question to people on this board who are familiar with his videos is, do you think Alex Jones sincerely believes what he is saying or is he purely an entertainer who knows that what he is saying is bullshit? To add a fittingly conspiratorial aspect to that question, do you think he's a plant to make anyone who believes in conspiracies of some sort look stupid? I know that's far fetched but it's all in fun.

I've also noticed that shootings that take place in the US and are perpetrated by white people are all hoaxes staged so that the government can take our guns. If it happens overseas and it is a Muslim, the shootings are real. Muslims attacking inside the US is a toss up because while he would really like to take the opportunity to bash Muslims, he has to remind folks that it's just the government trying to take away the 2nd amendment.

General / Underrated movie appreciation
May 21, 2016, 06:44:16 AM
I love the movie Run, Ronnie, Run. It is currently out of print but I got a copy off of eBay cheap. It makes me sad that it's out of print and has never had a blu-ray release. It is one of my favorite movies and I can't believe more people don't like it.

This song alone is amazing.

So it had to be Victor who put the note on Mike's car at the request of Gus, right? I looked for info on whether Gus would be returning but couldn't find anything. If you take the first letters of the episodes of this season you can spell "Fring's back". That's too big of a tease not to deliver in season 3. I don't particularly like cliffhanger endings to seasons but if Gus comes in, I'm cool.

General / Lead singer changes
April 09, 2016, 06:28:51 PM
I can never listen to bands after they switch lead singers. I can only think of a few exceptions. I liked the Pennywise album where they had the lead singer from Ignite singing. Maybe that's just because I was already a fan of Ignite and Pennywise was pretty stale (as they have once again become now that Jims back). Even in that case, I'd rather go see the original lineup sing songs from albums I view as classics.

I mentioned Sublime with Rome in another thread. Fuck that. Alice in Chains with what's his face? Go to hell! Black Sabbath with Dio? No sir. Don't try to fool me by changing the name, Audioslave. You're not fooling me! Get off my lawn!

*note: this only pertains to bands who changed singers after they've become famous and/or have a decent catalogue

General / presidential erection predictions
March 13, 2016, 07:40:25 AM
John F Kennedy upset by Bill Clinton for erect most often, Abraham Lincoln had the biggest erection, Richard Nixon erect least often (tied with William Henry Harrison), and least desirable erection goes to Herbert Hoover but if we count current candidates, Trump for the win.

I've been listening to a lot of metal from the 90s and early 00s lately. I didn't know what to call this thread, I just want to talk about how cool Pantera were and how I have been listening to Slipknot this evening....and enjoying it! I loved Slipknot when their first album came out and thought Iowa was a great album as well. While not as great as I remember, I still find a lot of the music I liked when I was 16 or 17 enjoyable. Banda like the Deftones, Tool, Nine Inch Nails, Marilyn Manson, and the like we're so awesome when I was younger and I like to throw them on along with the typical 90s grunge that I always go on about. Does or did anyone like the type of music I'm talking about? Do people understand that the above bands were not on the same low level as Limp Bizkit, Nickelback, Trapt, Hoobastank, Staind, and the like? I will admit I was into Staind when they first came out and as is the case with a lot of the music I listened to then, I can't listen to them now. I always loved punk music and can listen to nearly all of the punk bands now that I listened to then.

General / Crazy, sad stuff
February 04, 2016, 06:48:34 PM
http://www.wbiw.com/local/archive/2016/02/lincoln-pickett-charged-with-murder-of-missing-mitchell-woman.php

I used to hang out with this guy and his girlfriend (who he married) and his brother. I saw his brother more and always thought that Lincoln was the more balanced of the two. Granted his brother, John, is in prison too after he was caught robbing a house with an accomplice who hit the homeowner with a hammer. I feel like meth is driving people crazy. It's so sad.

General / Civil War Within Liberalism
December 19, 2015, 06:29:22 PM
I know the title in this thread may not be exactly accurate but I wanted to talk about it and see what people think. There are several huge conflicts happening between folks who would traditionally be considered liberal in terms of their political ideologies. They agree on many if not the majority of political policies that liberals traditionally support. The main disagreements seem to be centered around the role of Islam in world events. This was all seemingly sparked last year when Ben Affleck and Sam Harris appeared on Bill Maher's show, Real Time. Since that time, it's Ben getting pretty nasty with many hurling charges of racism and/or bigotry against others. I have also been hearing differences in opinion on modern (3rd wave) feminism, political correctness, the use of trigger warnings, and safe places. Opinions on war seem to be changing, as well.

Is everyone aware of what I'm talking about? If so, I'd love to hear your thoughts on these matters and where you stand on some of the issues listed above as well as other issues you have noticed as being hot topics or sore subjects.

General / Creep (Scott Weiland's death)
December 14, 2015, 06:38:55 PM
I know not too many people on this board are old enough to remember when Stone Temple Pilots and the like were cool, but I do. They were right up there with Soundgarden and a step above Alice in Chains who were also very good.

http://youtu.be/Uzx26V4WDlA

Okay. Mini-tribute over. I read an article by Weiland's ex-wife (mother of his children) and I'll post a link.  http://abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/scott-weilands-wife-pens-emotional-letter-death/story?id=35644271

This man had so many chances at getting sober and living a hell of a good life but chose to piss it away. How can you watch so many of your contemporaries die, leaving pain and misery in their wake and then carry on like nothing happened? Thanks for the music, Scott, but I would have rather you raised your children and been there for loved ones than to listen to Purple. I really hope the trend of heroin addicted idols is now dead with Mr. Weiland.

General / My wife's ex husband is an asshole
July 09, 2015, 09:02:13 PM
Just came here to vent. My wife's ex husband, Bryan, was physically abusive and well as severely emotionally abusive. She feared for her life when she was with him and was finally mentally strong enough to leave a few years ago. They are in a custody battle right now and even though there is a no contact order, he keeps messaging her (he is allowed to talk about the kids to her but that's supposed to be it). He makes threats to sue, is demanding, won't acknowledge ever doing anything wrong despite being convicted with evidence that leaves no doubt, is condescending, and is a fucking sociopath. She has me screen his emails to leave out that sort of thing when I relay messages. They've been going back and forth with me helping her find the words to say as she just wants to tell him to fuck off which would look bad in court, as he brings all of the emails in even when they are damning for hi,. He doesn't realize that he looks bad. Bryan wants Amanda to "talk like an adult about the kids future but when she tries he uses the tactics described above. When called out on this, he says she's misreading his emails and he couldn't possibly be communicating in that manner because it is "female speech".  Talking to him is like talking to an evil robot as he does not seem to have real emotions or a grasp on reality. He's former military and thinks that he's an American hero. I hope him and hope he gets hit by a truck. End of rant.

General / favorite mainstream newscaster?
June 25, 2015, 08:38:19 PM
This is going to shock people but Shepard Smith at Fox News does a damn good job and is entertaining. His hour report is the only good hour during s Fox News day. I'm not quite sure how he hasn't been fired as he has criticized Fox News while on Fox News. He also is the only one taking the other hosts to task. He's not as critical as I would like him to be, though it's a start.

General / Music 2015
March 26, 2015, 08:04:15 PM
I noticed we didn't have a thread about new music for 2015 and really just wanted to post how much I'm loving the new Strung Out album. If you grew up listening to them, I highly recommend you listen to this. I'm 4 songs in and it's their best album since Twisted By Design. I have always loved Strung Out but their last few albums haven't been too great in my opinion. This one is pretty fucking good. Last year Lagwagon pulled through with their best album in years. Next thing you know, NOFX will make a good album again. Just kidding. That won't happen.

General / Cool covers and original music
February 16, 2015, 08:25:34 AM
Has anyone else on here heard of Jenn Fiorentino? She does acoustic covers that are fucking awesome. Her Propagandhi and Strung Out covers are my favorite but all are pretty great. She does a great cover of Chalkline by Strike Anywhere. Her original material is pretty good, too. You guys should check her music out on YouTube and share your thoughts

I was searching around the internet and found a band called Break Anchor that has members of the Suicide Machines and Alkaline Trio. I really like the two songs I heard. I tried to figure out how to buy or download their music. I got to their facebook page and they have 12 songs total and it appears they have released 3 EPs but I couldn't figure out how to buy their music without buying each song individually. I guess I wouldn't mind paying the 12 bucks for all the songs but I would rather be able to buy albums. I've purchased albums from bands' pages before via downloads but I can't do it on their site. Is this a thing now where rather than buying albums, you just buy songs individually? I don't like that for some reason. The torrent sites that I frequent don't usually have obscure punk bands. I don't want to get lectured about supporting artists as the vast majority of my downloading consists of albums I've purchased in the past.

General / Guns
November 20, 2014, 06:15:18 AM
I recently bought a handgun as well as a conceal and carry license. I was really struck by how easy it was to get a gun and a license to carry one. I went to a gun show at the armory in a neighboring town and it was full of right wing gun nuts with obscene amounts of guns. Some of these were licensed gun dealers and some were not. The ones who were not licensed were something else. I went in and decided I wanted to buy a gun for target shooting (I did not grow up with guns as a kid but enjoyed shooting them with friends as a teenager). I went up to the guy and gave him $300 and got a 9 mm pistol in return. He checked my driver's license to see if I was 18 and that was it. No background check, no personal information taken, no receipt. The man who claimed to be a Marine said that since he was just a dude selling guns and not a dealer there were no hoops to jump through. He started lamenting liberals which I found funny given the shirt I was wearing under my hoodie.

The license process was somewhat thorough as far as criminal background goes but was lacking in terms of screening for mental health. The mental health check was just me checking a box saying basically that I do not and have not had mental health issues.

Does the fact that a mentally unstable felon can walk into a gun show and get as many guns as they  like bother anyone?. I know that a felon couldn't get a license but I don't really think that a lot of felons would care about getting a license. I also know that it's hypocritical to engage in this process and then question it but it is somewhat alarming to me.

I really liked this idea from the old board and want to contribute some positivity after my last few posts. I'm going to start this by saying something nice about Ryan, pronetoaccidents, since he started the last thread.

Ryan, while sometimes I think your energy is misdirected, I admire how passionate you are about things. I also think you are a very strong person who is overcoming a lot. I know you can reach your goals and hope you find the peace and happiness you deserve. You seem to have a lot of love to give and the world is a better, more interesting place with you in it.
