Title: Plan-It-X Soda Thread
Post by: Semi on July 03, 2014, 05:28:35 AM
Since there's a beer and alcohol thread I thought I would balance it all out with a soda-thread. Since soda is the fucking bomb ya'll.

Today I'm drinking Cuba Cola and something called M.A.C Cola which is some sort of cola mixed with orange.

Cuba Cola is a swedish soda which is very very sweet and tastes a bit of cinnamon, it's pretty tough to find nowadays (it was popular in the 80s) and when you find it it's in the "Kids soda"-aisle (as if kids and grownups have different taste in soda?) which makes me do a walk of shame. But it's fucking worth it because Cuba Cola is the best thing since Rosa Luxemburgs book "The accumulation of capital".

I haven't tried the other cola yet, will return later (or tommorow depending on how much sugar this body can take).

Do you have any favourite soda?

What soda are you currently drinking?

What goes well with soda?

How do you feel that soda-drinking has affected your life?

Send me one of those Cuba Colas!

I love Soda.  I've tried nearly 400 different brands.

All-time favorite: Red Rock Cola.  It's generally kinda tough to find outside of Georgia, but if you're a cola fan and see it, I'd definitely recommend picking one up.  Mr. Cola is also really great and is a little easier to find.  Fentiman's Curiosity Cola is phenomenal, and Virgil's Special Edition Bavarian Nutmeg Root Beer is outstanding if you're willing to shell out between $3-5 for a nice, swivel top soda.

I'm not drinking a soda at this very second, but the last one I had was Pure Sodaworks Strawberry Jalepeno soda.  The flavors were pretty weak, which is surprising for a PS soda.  Their Cafe Cola is probably the best thing they make, though.

What doesn't go well with soda?

Soda drinking has in a really weird way contributed to my identity.  Multiple people at PIXfest brought me gifts of soda (thanks!!!), and I routinely get picture messages of weird sodas people are drinking.  It's pretty cool.

For an incomplete photo documentation of sodas I've had: https://www.facebook.com/dakotafloyd/media_set?set=a.10151819643427723.1073741828.671157722&type=3

I tried to exclude the big name sodas that most everyone has had (Coke, Pepsi, Dr Pepper, and RC products), but trust that I've had nearly all of them.

Dakota had I known you were such a Soda fanatic I would have brought you some Faygo Rock N Rye to PIX. I only gave a few to Boogdish.

We can definitely fix some sort of soda-trade! I don't really know how, but it has to be possible!

Quote from: dakotafloyd on July 03, 2014, 09:43:43 AMTheir Cafe Cola is probably the best thing they make, though.

I drank a coffee-variant of Coca Cola in when I was in Czechoslovakia a few years ago called Coca Cola Bläk which tasted really really bad.

M.A.C cola wasn't all that great by the way, just tasted like coca cola with a bit of fanta in it, gave the rest away to one of my housemates.

All-time favorite: Red Rock Cola.  It's generally kinda tough to find outside of Georgia, but if you're a cola fan and see it, I'd definitely recommend picking one up.

The Red Rock Ginger Ale is pretty amazing, as well! The grocery store near me when I lived in Asheville had it and I'd get it all of the time.

I'm allllll about some ginger ale and ginger beer. My current favorite is Bruce Cost Unfiltered Jasmine Ginger Ale. So so so good. Blenheim Ginger Ale is also really good, but that's hard to find outside of GA, SC, and NC general stores.

I need to find a store here similar to Rocket Fizz. Rocket Fizz had so much weird soda and I would try to get a new one every time I went. I wish I could remember the name of this one because it was so disgusting. It had an alien on the label and was some kind of weird berry flavor I had never heard of. I don't know if it was just old or the soda is legitimately nasty. Has anyone tried that or know the name?

M.A.C. cola is my cola. not that i drink it, i mean i own. well i created it, then couldn't get the funds to get it off the ground so i sold for a few hundred dollars to the guy i met at the train station.

Dakota knows his stuff about soda...he's like the soda guru man
I trust in him on all cola, soda, and pop related matters

I like foregin colas because in the suburbia desert I live in you can't find independent sodas
but the asian market in town has some of theirs, and Kroger has some mexican ones.

Do you call it soda, or cola, or pop?

SNAP CRACKLE

I've got a Dr Pepper tattoo.

One of my favorite sodas is Jarritos.  I think it's the most popular Mexican exported soda so you can find it a lot of places with a large Mexican population.  There are several flavors, my favorite being guava and tamarind.

I would be down for a soda trade too! Iceland has a bunch of really good sodas. My favourite is Appelsin, which is an orange soda that doesn't taste anything like orange.

so happy that dakota was the first person to respond to this thread.

having just moved to canada from the uk i am very excited at the amount of new soda pops i get to try. i am mostly trying to sample every kind of root beer possible but jones's bubblegum is also up my alley, as are most apple flavoured things. the jarritos i've tried have been good. there is also a higher quality of cream soda over here, they were mostly all terrible in the uk. i'm not a huge cream soda fan but could be partial to one once in a while now i know i can get decent ones.

also me and kw are planning a root beer zine so any root beer fans should look out for that in the not too distant future.

ginger ale is my jam, i'd love to hear y'alls favorites. i like 'em real spicy if possible.

i loooove soda but i'm trying to cut back because sugar. i had a dr. browns ginger ale last night that was basically your typical "natural" type ginger ale. it was okay.

i also LOVE orange sodas, my favorite of all time is jarritos mandarin and hansen's tangerine and lime which tastes just like jarritos mandarin.

my boyfriend got a soda stream for christmas so i've been really into making my own "soda", i made one batch of ginger syrup that was really good but i made it too sweet and syrupy (like gloppy), but i mixed ginger syrup and limeade concentrate and soda water and it was fucking delicious. a few days ago i made sparkling raspberry lemonade with fresh crushed raspberries, it was pretty good. i wanna get into making lavender blends, i wanna try lavender ginger and lavender blueberry sodas the most. and also, sparkling teas! i wanna make a sparkling passion tea real bad. not sure if these count as SODA though.

I very seldom drink soda anymore (cutting down is probably the best thing I've ever done for my health), but once or twice a month I'll get a Cheerwine or a Tamarindo Jarritos.

There's a root beer from Northern Virginia called Dominion that I used to love but I haven't found any in my current city yet.

Dakota got me really hooked on root beers this past winter when he brought me a bottle of Filberts (thanks again, by the way), and I've been on a quest since to try whatever kinds I could, and so far have had Virgil's, Hansen's, various popular brands, Faygo, Jones, Frosties, Henry Weinhard, and a couple others I'm at a loss for.

I'm super into ginger beers right now.  For mixing with whiskey and on their own.  Gosling's is my favorite because it's super spicy.  Reed's is nice too but it's less aggressively ginger flavored and has a little more fruit to it.

I also loooooooooove Diet Coke.  It's so good.  I can't really stomach coffee anymore and I'm usually way too lazy to make tea at work so Diet Coke has become my go-to stress caffeinated beverage.

Stoked that you omitted the period after Dr.  Most folks don't know that it hasn't been in the official spelling / formatting of the name since the 50s.

Keep me posted on that RB zine, bee.  Super interested!  I'm assuming you've tried the Virgil's Special Edition RB w/ Bavarian Nutmeg?  It's seldom seen for under 3 bucks, but is totally worth it.

Starbucks has a new (well, they've been in the South for awhile for test marketing) line of sodas, so if anyone on here goes there, they might be worth your time.  So far I've able to try the Cane Cola and the Spice Root Beer flavors.  The CC was tasty, but the RB was pretty bland.  Definitely not worth the $2+, but if you have a gift card or something like I did what do you have to lose?

Limca is a lemon lime soda that Coke bought the rights to back in the 90s.  It reminds me of a better, more flavorful version of Sprite or 7UP in which you can actually taste both the lemon and lime flavors, and pretty strongly at that.  If you ever see it and are into that sort of thing, I'd recommend it.  I usually skip lemon lime sodas because the flavors are almost always weak, but this one is pretty unique.

Interesting fact: Limca publishes their own India-specific book of world records, ala the Guinness Book.

Another Indian soda that Coke bought the rights to, to keep Pepsi from doing so first, is Thums Up.  It's a cola with a punch of ginger!

I tried my first ginger beer today! I really enjoy the flavor, the slight spiciness makes my tongue very happy!

What'd ya have?  Some of my favorite ginger drinks are Buffalo Rock Ginger Ale, Maine Root Ginger Brew, Gosling's Ginger Beer, Trader Joe's Triple Ginger Brew, and Swamp Pop Jean Lafitte Ginger Ale.

Honorable mention goes to Goya Jamaican Ginger Beer, Bundaberg Ginger Beer, Ale-8-One, Royalty Ginger Beer, and Red Rock Golden Ginger Ale.
I've had Reeds, I plan on ordering different types. Also! Per one of your longest standing recommendations to me, I ordered a bottle of the Special Edition Virgil's Root Beer and a bottle of Red Rock Cola. I'm practically sitting on my own hands with excitement.

Oh, Vernors.  It's more weird to me than anything.  I don't think I like it, but deep down I kind of know of do.  It's like a creamy ginger ale.  Very strange.

Rory (and anyone else from Michigan), what are your thoughts on Towne Club, if you've had it?  TC Peach was one of the first sodas that inspired me to dedicate a pretty big chunk of tour time to finding local sodas in the cities we played in.

Frostie is also a Michigan thing, right?

Yeah I looked it up and that's a somewhat recent change. I think sometimes too stuff is well distributed on the East side of the state near Detroit, but poorly over where I am. But according to wikipedia, Towne Club is available in Kalamazoo, so I should go on a quest for it.

Hey kw and / or bee, ever try Tommyknocker Root Beer?  I picked one up on a whim while I was on tour, and it's one of the most unique RBs I've tried yet.  Flavored with pure cane sugar AND maple syrup.  It was like pancake root beer.

Also, currently sipping my first Fentimans Rose Lemonade.  Delicious!  For some reason, I guess the tartness, it makes me think of a really good grapefruit soda.

Whenever I'm around a place with a WorldMarket, I tend to go in there and see what they are clearing out. Most recently, they had this Mint Julep flavored soda for like 25-cents apiece. Just delicious.

World Market soda clearance is great.  I got a bunch of my favorites for 17 cents each last time the store close to me ran one.  WM is pretty cool because they change their soda selection every quarter or so.  It's actually probably time for them to switch it up within the next few weeks.

Also, that mint julep soda is delicious.  It sounded really weird, and the label art kinda stinks, but it's really tasty.  Next time you're in a WM I'd recommend trying some of Swamp Pop's stuff.  The best one is the cucumber ginger ale.  It burns then cools itself.

Has anyone tried these? I just had the ginger one today and was really underwhelmed by it. It boasted "More Ginger! Less Sweet!" annnnnd it just tasted like watered down unsweetened ginger ale. I have three more bottles, so maybe it'll get better.

A store near my house just started carrying these.  I tried the Kola and was pretty unimpressed; although I like most all of the ingredients listed, it had an almost sorghum or molasses aftertaste that I couldn't get past.  I guess I'm just not a big fan of agave sweetened sodas.

Dakota, that Pumpkin Spice Tonic looks so good! Where did you pick that up at?

I bought a six-pack of Zevia Black Cherry flavored that I'm finally almost done with. I think I should just stick to getting one bottle/can of a soda I want to try. I don't like drinking a whole lot of soda, so I'm not so into drinking the same one more than once in a short amount of time.

It came from World Market. That being said, it's from Orca Bev so most soda shops should have it. Didn't really taste like pumpkin, though. It was more of a chai cream soda. Not bad, but not as good as I was hoping.

Maine Root makes a good Pumpkin Pie soda that should be pretty easy to find. Jack's Pumpkin Patch is the way to go, though.

The new Coca Cola (Coca Cola Life?) was pretty okay. If I understand it correctly it's made with a mix of sweetener and sugar. The question is _why_.

I'm picking one of those up tomorrow; in the US they're only available in select stores around the South until late next month.

The reason they've made this drink is to try to break into the alternative sweetener market (although it does seem weird to mix multiple types of sweeteners). Huge company, I'm surprised it took them this long.

So, that Nature's Pure FV Cola was tasty, but soooooo thick.  It was almost like drinking straight syrup.  I couldn't manage to finish half of the bottle.

In other news, a soda that was marked in the store as being a cherry kola actually turn out to be a soda made from Thai chili peppers because someone placed the drinks in the complete wrong order on the shelf.  Fortunately for me, the company is sending me a replacement bottle for free!

It's called Blå-dåre (translates to Blue Idiot, it's an idiom) and supposed to taste like blueberry, which it in no way does. But it's still pretty good, and your toungue gets really blue after drinking it. It's made by a swedish brand called Tre Hjärtan but apparently they now call themselves Three Hearts so I guess they're available outside of Sweden now?

Guarana-flavored sodas are pretty good!  The flavor is a little weird at first, but after awhile you get used to it.  Have you ever had BAWLS?  They make a guarana root beer that I've been looking for.

Pretty sure I talked about these earlier on in this thread, but a store right next to my house started stocking them, and I was finally able to use all of the coupons I won!

Mix Cheerwine with Canada Dry Ginger Ale (or any other basic ginger ale), and that's what it tastes like. It's pretty good! If it wasn't marked as being Cheerwine, I'm not sure I would have been able to recognize it as such, but again, it's worth trying.

It's been a huge hit so far, and I think they're going to really expand the market next year.

I think Cheerwine is tasty, but it's definitely overhyped.  I think it's cool that Cheerwine is still an independent, family-owned company, and I also think a lot of folks really latch onto it because 1) there aren't really many other purely cherry sodas (most are cherry cola or cherry plus some other flavor) and 2) Cheerwine is something that's this weird balance of being mainstream yet uncommon.  People know about Cheerwine and have maybe had it a time or two, but seldom see it on their store shelves.  For most of its life, Cheerwine has been a cool Southern thing (although its been popping up all over the place recently) and has this strange hype around it because of its almost geographically exclusive distribution map.
Title: Re: Plan-It-X Soda Thread
Post by: Phitney on December 19, 2014, 08:11:13 AM
Honestly, I'm not sure I've experienced a huge hype over Cheerwine besides how much I love it. Most of the people I talk to about it say, "Oh yeah, that's a good soda" or they haven't heard of it. For me, it's made right near where I grew up and it was a huge part of my childhood when my dad and I would walk to the general store and buy Cheerwine in a glass bottle. That's a huge reason why I enjoy it besides, like Dakota said, it's one of the few fully cherry sodas out there and it's just tasty. I'm not entirely sure where this hype or even overhype of Cheerwine is coming from from other people?

Maybe it's just from people babbling about it on this board, but it was talked about non-stop not too long ago like some holy grail of soda, and when I tried it in NC i was completely dissapointed.

You probably don't see the hype as much because you grew up in an area in which Cheerwine was pretty commonplace and seen around a lot.  For us East Coasters, I think of it in relation to Cactus Cooler.  I remember hearing about how awesome Cactus Cooler was for years, but never had the chance to try it because it's even more impossible to find on the East Coast than Cheerwine is on the West Coast.  When I finally tried it in Santa Barbara a few years ago, I was pretty underwhelmed.  It was good, but not the-best-soda-I've-ever-had-and-will-ever-have good like it had been hyped up to me.

When you boil it all down and remove all of the emotional associations with it, unless you get it in a glass bottle, Cheerwine's just another HFCS soda that happens to be decently tasty and also decently hard to find.

I had no idea Cactus Cooler was hard to find or hyped outside of the west. It's not that special, either.

It's not as hyped as Cheerwine, but I've never seen it east of Arizona.

Do you guys have Tahitian Treat over there?  I think that was Dr P. / Snapple Group's answer to CC for us East Coasters.

Man, I love Tahitian Treat!  The Save-a-lot in my hometown used to have a knock off version of it called Waikiki Punch that managed to somehow be even more delicious for only 29 cents per two liter.  My friends and I would always take it to quiz bowl meets in high school.

Awh man!  I remember Waikiki Punch.  Save-a-lot has some great names for their sodas: Mountain Holler (and variant Red Howl), Bubba Cola, Tubz Root Beer

I haven't seen it out this way, but I'm definitely not paying as much attention as you are, to be fair. I'm not as good of a connoisseur.

That makes sense. For the area I grew up in, Cheerwine is just always there so it's hard to hype it up when it's not something hard to find.

Anyways, I checked the grocery store near my parents' house and they didn't have the Holiday Cheerwine, but I'll be searching for it elsewhere either today or tomorrow. Otherwise, I'll just mix ginger ale and Cheerwine and make my own.

Cool soda company out of Durham, NC.  "Wolf" is the name of their sarsaparilla.  Delicious!
