I was listening to music today and ended up listening to a lot of Bad Religion. When doing so I wondered, is there anyone who is into punk and doesn't think Bad Religion is great? I mean we can all disagree as to which album is their best and worst and if/when they stopped putting out great music but does anyone question their greatness? I thought they might be the only band who we can agree are not overrated. Of course I could be wrong. Thoughts? Can anyone think of another band we can all agree is or was great?
I remember the first time I saw them live and they were fantastic despite being well into their 40s at the time. It's one of the two or three times I've been star struck. The only time I can remember being more in awe of a band is in 2000 when I saw Green Day and was right up against the front of the stage at the Warped Tour. The 2000 Warped Tour was the best.
Defiance, Ohio, right?
So far so good.
Okay so what about The Descendents? I could see some people saying they're overrated but I think they're great. Operation Ivy is one I think we can agree on despite their limited catalogue
I don't think I've ever even listened to Operation Ivy... Whoops.
I feel like everyone on this board likes the Mountain Goats, but I'm sure there is one person here (out of the 10 or so active members haha) who will veto that opinion.

I'm pretty sure Brett has gotten huffy over them before.
Speaking of getting huffy... I don't dislike Bad Religion, but I could probably only recognize like 2 of their songs. I never really listened to them for some reason, even during the height of that era of punk.
ah descendants is one i just couldnt ever get into. I keep feeling like I need to give them another shot every time I say that though. seems like a band everyone cares about.
I back op ivy 100%
I was playing them at the pizza shop and an older couple liked it and ended up buying a cd online it was sweet
Operation Ivy is pretty much the best. That's amazing Eugene.
I've never really gotten into the mountain goats. I like the handful of songs I've heard of theirs just fine, but not enough to make me actively listen to them.
The Descendents are another band that I feel like are just alright. Milo is a good record but even as a kid I found myself rolling my eyes at the woe is me suburban whiteboy heartache, and homophobia, and misogyny in their lyrics. I should listen to them more and appreciate the music and pay attention to the lyrics a little less... the melodies are good. Suburban Home, I'm Not A Punk, and 'Merican are untouchable though.
I think I'm ruining the thread.
I thought this thread was going to be about FRNTRNNR

Oh boy, not a fan of the Mountain Goats but I've not heard much. I don't really care for what I've heard.
I think the Descendents argument is a good one and can see why a person wouldn't put them on the pedestal that others do.
Jer, you need to listen to more Bad Religion. Just skip to No Control and keep going.
I don't even know how a person can be into punk music and not have heard any Operation Ivy. I guess if you're under 25 then maybe I can see it but you need to check them out immediately before everyone finds out and pulls your punk card.
Do not like: Bad Religion, Operation Ivy, The Mountain Goats

Nah, I've never been a fan of either, especially Bad Religion. I don't remember Operation Ivy enough to give an opinion now, just remember not liking them back in the day.
I mean, if I were picking a favorite punk band, I'd go with The Gun Club, so take that how you wish.
Love the Descendents too but people already spoke up against them.
I also submit: The Kinks
Also, Big Star, though I suspect a lot of dang fools just don't listen to Big Star.

You would really prefer to listen to Meatloaf to than The Decline? Say what you will about NOFX but they were the shit when I was a teenager and I still can listen to Punk in Drublic and enjoy it. The Decline has got to be their best, though. Honestly, the b side compilation (disc 1) is pretty great too.

I know it's cliche but Green Day? Is there anyone here who has not really liked at least one of their albums in their entire life? Lookout! era Screeching Weasel is pretty hard to argue with as well. What about Propagandhi?
I just got done listening to a bunch of NOFX songs and I forgot how great they can be. A lot of their songs make me roll my eyes when I hear them now but they do have some that hold up pretty well. I don't think they should be so quickly dismissed.

Operation Cliff Clavin may get total board approval (kw excluded). They get my seal of approval. Black Sabbath too.
What about 80s Metallica? Doesn't everyone like Master of Puppets?
I should have named this thread "bands that we can all agree put out at least one great album" and maybe more progress could be made.
If we don't count kw then Defiance, Ohio and Jawbreaker win. Jawbreaker is the clear winner though we would have to reach out to kw for final approval before using the 100% PIX Board Approved stamp that Jer has in his desk.

Well, shit. Who well I don't know who else to crown. Let's go classics. Does everyone like Jimi Hendrix? Johnny Cash?
I was going to back to rap and ask about Public Enemy or Rakim. I feel like other rappers can't get the seal of approval due to violence, sexism, and homophobia. Outkast are great but the aforementioned complaints might hold them back. I don't think they're too bad as far as that stuff goes compared to their other rappers from their era.
I think we should just crown Defiance, Ohio until KW tells us otherwise. I would also be open to giving the crown to Propagandhi just because they're great and I thought everyone liked them.
Wu Tang?
It's probably Limp Bizkit.

Johnny Cash

I really appreciate the video and like the song but I feel like Wu Tang Clan are better. I feel like all of the rap artists I've named are better than Run the Jewels. Clipse is great. 2pac, Biggie, Nas, Jay-Z, Eminem, Kurupt, Ice Cube, Snoop Dogg, etc. All better. Immortal Technique is another underrated rapper, though he needs to put out more material. Dead Prez is another good group.
I do really like this video and am downloading some of their stuff now so that's a win for this thread in my opinion. Thanks!

I doubt it. This thread is not going to have a neat resolution. I thought about making a poll to see which band with a lot of mentions wins and ending the thread that way. It kind of defeats the purpose though since it won't be a band we all agree on. If we could get to 90% I think that's a success
