Really enjoying the Flamingo Shadow EP from last year. Basically Madeline doing Jefferson Airplane, hell yeah.
Other than that, I've mostly just been listening to Marilyn Manson, Black Eyes, Fiona Apple, and Paul Simon lately.

I've been listening to a lot of music that my younger self would ridicule me for liking. It's weird how much my taste in music has changed over the past few years. I was listening to Simon and Garfunkle the other day and the Beach Boys-Pet Sounds last night. I gained a little more appreciation for the Beach Boys in college X during a history of rock and roll course but never thought I'd listen to them.
Anderson Paak - Malibu is something I put on at least once a day when I'm at work.
Just got a copy of Husker Du - New Day Rising and am thrilled about it, so a lot of that.
and it's summer, so I'm listening to too much Radiator Hospital.

Here's a few more I've been digging.
I really have a hard time getting into modern rap but I think Hopsin is pretty good. I like Montana of 300 too. Here's a few of the songs I like.
https://youtu.be/bA4xvmH3WSQ
https://youtu.be/TBJ3bSOLCvY
https://youtu.be/0OfiCyBHvBI
If you only listen to one of these songs, listen to Slaughterhouse. It has the usual violent content but is pretty great nonetheless. I really don't care what someone raps about as long as it's clever. I'm sure there are exceptions to that rule, though.
Speaking of modern hip hop, I recently heard this grime dude I'm really digging (ignore the video it's silly but the songs are sweet):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TrOwSEpYLKg
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tl1dc2cEJfs
If we're gonna talk about new hip hop...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Do2xXV2xrr0
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QJksTRgY8-c
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iuq9XK6tojs
That JME is awesome.
Some of these other videos are just too heavy on guns/violence/drugs etc for my taste. That's why I'd been digging Hopsin and Dem Atlas so much, I seem to be able to relate to their songs a lot easier.
However, I think it was Anna Karina who posted this on the old forum and I've been looking for songs like it ever since. While the lyrical content is basically everything I just said I hated, I can't get over how good the beat is. I think the style is referred to as Chill Hop, but what do I know I could have made that up. All the other Lucki Eck$ stuff just doesn't compare, but I've probably listened to this song 20 times now. Anyone know any songs that sound like this?

Also just heard this guy for the first time today and enjoying exploring his stuff more thoroughly.

I understand where you're coming from I think I'm just used to it because that the kind of rap I grew up listening to. A lot of the rappers seem very thoughtful in interviews despite their violent content. I can't watch videos or get into rap when the artist is clearly an idiot. Speaking of which...
https://youtu.be/2safGftL1iU
...this guy is a moron. I hope he doesn't get popular.
There's a lot more depth to it than just guns/violence/drugs, at least with the stuff I posted.
Vince Staples is a former Crip whose father was also a gang member, grew up in Long Beach, has a pretty specific point of view, an incredible flow, and is incredibly honest with regards to his childhood and what drew him into gang life. Also that music video is just cool.
Ka is an FDNY captain who has an incredible sense of storytelling and has a pretty dense focus on people/families dealing with hardships in Brooklyn, and may get fired from firefighting because the New York post wrote a lynchmob article about his "secret" double life as a firefighter.
ScHoolboy Q is definitely on the glorification side of things. Was also a Crip and tends to veer towards straight up gangster rap. His sense of timing and wordplay is what makes him interesting. Kendrick Lamar has learned a lot from him.
I always loved the Handsome Boy Modeling School albums!

Audio books.
The new Raffi CD.
My favorite active band is The Menzingers. All of their albums have been good. This song was released last month and I can't wait for the new album.
https://youtu.be/JF8F_NTSwdc
Also, as mentioned in another thread the new Against Me! album is good. I'd like to know everyone else's thoughts on it. I actually bought it since none of the torrent sites I used to frequent work anymore.

I'm also seeing Beach Slang next week, but with the current issues surrounding the band, it looks like it will be acoustic now. Good thing I have this NPR video to make me think that might not be the worst thing in the world.

Also Brian wilson-smile, John Lennon and plastic ono.band, early googoo dolls, rosa, dead moon, x, black fag (not a typo
Awesome queer hardcore)
My mom is dying so I mostly just listen to Off With Their Heads these days because that band is like 75% about dying/dead moms.
]Amanda I'm so sorry you're going through that. I lost my mom a few years ago and I think it goes without saying it was one of the most painful feelings this universe can dish up. I know I'm just some random guy in a message board but if you ever feel like talking lemme know.
Off with their heads are amazing on so many levels. The lyrics are absolutely brutal but the music so catchy that it speaks to you and also uplift you.. well that's what happens to me at least. I had nothing but an off with their heads tape years back when I was suicidal and living in a horrible half way house and shooting dope. I know this might sound dramatic but they saved my life

so fucking raw, ridiculous, brutal, brilliant, insane.. i dunno, if you never heard it check it out. but a quick preface: it's about a guy killing his girlfriend who cheated on him. and the guy went crazy over it, came back for the baby.. well, you either know the song or don't, you'll either listen or not so i should just start rambling..
NOW THIS... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uukxhsqhynk
(you probably know or heard of them. if for some reason somone hasn't, the best description i heard was "a mix of ramones and GG Allin).. i'd word it differently personally but that's that.

I'm really looking forward to the new Menzingers album that comes out next week. All 3 songs they have released so far have been great. The latest is After the Party:
https://youtu.be/vBTN0i-sscc
I agree this seems like it could be the best menzingers album to date.
I'm glad I found someone else who is quite fond of them. My wife likes them okay but she's more into stuff that sounds like 90s grunge and alternative. I'm all about 90s grunge and alternative but not so much into "grunge" that was made this century. She will listen to my music but I don't think she understands why I like it so much. Sometimes I can listen to some of the newer music she plays but most times I do a phantom eye roll. She is sometimes surprised by some of the bands I like such as AFI. They just released a new album. It's self titled but is known as The Blood Album (If I parodied an AFI album title I doubt I could come up with one this ridiculous). It's okay but pretty boring.
yeah menzingers are sweet

He played drums for a very technical band that played my house a few years back called Para-Medics. He's friends with a few friends of mine and pretty much everyone describes him as an actual genius. I'm always stoked when good people get some traction on their hard work and diligence, so I'm really stoked for him.

Ben Weasel may be a garbage human being but damn it if he didn't make some of the best punk music ever. I think it's interesting having heard him talk politics and then listen to songs like Racist Society. It doesn't seem like the same person.

NOFX's covers are stronger than Rancid's in my opinion with Corazon de Oro being the best.
speaking of NOFX, is anyone else a Decline fan? any does anyone wanna list their top 5 NOFX albums if you dig em?
1) Punk in Drublic
2) So long and thanks for the Shoes
3) White Trash, Two Heebs and a Bean
4) Ripped
5) Pump up the Valuum
---------------------
i've also been really into Thee Temple Ov Pyschik Youth which was founded by Genesis P-Orridge of Throbbing Gristle which was an extremely interesting and inspiration esoteric and occult movement in the UK.. anyhow it's not about that, it's about the band's that were connected with it and the brilliant music they produced (well i find it brilliant. it might just be absurd noise to you but listen to it and it will force it's way into your subconscious and then there's no escaping it once you've been intellectually inseminated..

I though it was viewed as a classic but I'm out of touch, too. 3) So Long.. 4) Heavy Petting Zoo 5) Coaster
I'm not counting the Decline since it's just one song. Coaster is the surprise on the list but I enjoy it more than Ribbed
I was thinking of best Screeching Weasel albums. 1) My Brain Hurts 2) Anthem for a New Tomorrow 3) Boogada Boogada Boogada 4) Wiggle 5) Television City Dream tied with Emo. I couldn't leave Emo off after giving it a quick listen. Even though it's not as catchy, the lyrics are better than TCD.

Just listened to two episodes of S-Town last night. Pretty engrossing... looking at Google Maps and everything. lol.

and cause all I seem to listen to is emo music these days, the new Brand New album is actually really good.

I'm learning to play the ukelele so I've been watching a bunch of ukelele videos. I'm kind of obsessed with this one

Can't stop listening to this album, and this track in particular.

New single from The Front Bottoms, woooooo!

And Taylor Swift's new single would have been pretty good if she didn't ruin it with that wack ass chorus...

I'm having a hard time getting into that new front bottoms song.
Still looking forward to the new album though.
Yeah, it's a good song, it's just nothing fantastic.

Yes! I was just going to post that I've been listening to this. It is really good and I'm glad I'm not the only one who appreciates it. I wouldn't classify Brand New as emo. It's hard to categorize them and they are one of my favorite bands. I really love how they've changed pretty significantly with every album but still manage to be great. Not a lot of bands can do that. It's hard to believe this is the same band that put out Your Favorite Weapon which was a guilty pleasure album back when I was younger (as was Deja Entendu but for different reasons due to change in sound).
Also, a classic I didn't appreciate at the time (or felt I wasn't supposed to like) when I was younger:

I've been listening to a lot post-reunion Dinosaur Jr lately. I don't know why it took me about a year to get into their latest album-considering they're one my favorite bands-but I've been pretty addicted the past week. The Lou songs are some of his best in their whole catolog.
Is it weird that I've been listening to a lot of the poppier rock that I used to roll my eyes at as a teenager/college student? All American Rejects are pretty heavy in rotation right now. Maybe I always liked bands like this but supressed the urge to listen due to fears of being ridiculed by the cool punk kids. It kind of sucked because I never quite fit in with the punk crowd but I really wanted to, I just didn't go full regalia like some. I'm not sure why. It's probably the early 90s grunge streak I had and was hanging onto way past the expiration date.

I used to say the same thing about Minor Threat.
The Front Bottoms released a second single from the new album and it's a lot better than the first single...

So much better and it makes the first one better knowing it's the same story

I was just joking/trolling with the Minor Threat comment because ya' know, straight edge. I need to work on my trolling.
7 Seconds are straight edge too. You took my horrible joke.

That's perfect! I have seen Lethal Weapon 1 and 2 probably over 200 times each. My mom loved Mel Gibson when I was a kid (before everyone found out he's a piece of shit) and so I saw a lot of his movies. My favorite was Lethal Weapon 2.

Haha nice! I forgot how to post photos for a second so I'm glad I stuck to fixing it rather than deleting it entirely like I almost did
The whole album is on YouTube of course so here's the playlist

I can't wait until I get a while to actually sit down and enjoy the album
EDIT: I love this album. It's their best since Potemkin City Limits in my opinion. It's at least as good as Supporting Caste though since it's new and shiny, I may just be caught in the moment. It's got the thrash/metal elements but it also has more of a punk feel than Failed States.
I love all their albums to different and equal degrees at this point, but Supporting Caste and Failed States took me a few extra listens to really sink in. I had to sit with the lyric sheets and let it dissolve in but now they have some of my favorite songs. This one really hit hard from the first drop. I legitimately started crying in public listening to Adventures in Zoochosis for the first time. Lower Order is a poppy but powerful song that, honestly, slapped the sense back into me irt my veganism - it's been easy for me to just have it be a habit and not something I think about. Cop Just Out Of Frame is really powerful on a few levels. Call Before You Dig is, imo, a great soft nihilist anthem haha. They're all fucking bangers.
also I went to see Princess Nokia last night and she covered Sum 41 so that was fun
That new Worriers album is fucking amazing.
There's a new worrier album??

This is the best album of the past 10 years in my opinion. I've had a chance to sit and read the lyrics while listening and I'm blown away by this album. Adventures in Zoochosis is perfect. I was listening while playing with my daughter and it hit me pretty hard. I can't recommend this album enough, especially to old people like me (and Jer).

I feel like a normie, but this band has really been bringing it for me. I didn't super care for Murder of the Universe, but Flying Microtonal Banana and this album, for different reasons, really resonate with me. I hate the band name more than any band I've ever enjoyed or probably ever will, though.

This song though, been on repeat for a week. Seeing her open for Tiny moving parts and Mom Jeans on Wed. I can't wait.
Hi Board, I miss you. I've been in a weird mood for the last like... year and a half and I haven't really listened to any music at all in that time and it's also kept me from posting here for whatever reason. I've felt like I have nothing to say or contribute. I'm trying to make a concerted effort to remain being one of the six people still here because I love this place and all of you.
Like I said, I really haven't listened to music in almost two years but I heard the new Morrissey single in a bar earlier today and it was kind of good and kind of bad. So I'm posting it.

I like the instrumentation and melody but the lyrics are pretty trite. Like an afterthought.
