General / Re: New Weird Al Videos

Everything Semi and Dakota said up there. I battle constantly with my co-workers re: grammar/usage and so on. I teach alongside a lot of people who will no doubt show this on the first day of school. But they are also the type of people who deduct points in red ink for everything that isn't standard written English. Some of them are real dirtbags and have practices that, from my observation, comes off as straight-up racist at times.

I grew up with Weird Al. I still like Weird Al. I don't listen to his music, but I will watch these videos at least once through because of the comfort factor.

I just moved into my house and had to change TV providers to Comcast Xfinity. Dealing with them has been the biggest headache of buying a house, including all the mortgage crap. I hate them.

Having said that, their OnDemand setup is a freakin' miracle. I finally was able to start watching Fargo (I've enjoyed it), the past season of Mad Men (not so much. Whatever), and various other things. HBO's on-demand might be worth the price of cable alone.

Kel and I just finished Orange is the New Black yesterday. It was a disappointing season, comparatively speaking. I saw the ending from a mile away but still could not believe it ended in such a dumb way.

On paper, I think I've got it together on point. In practice, eh, I'm existing.

I'm about to start my third year of teaching high school. I hate it and I am looking to leave the profession as soon as I can. I'll stop there because otherwise I'll write a page-long rant about how much I despise my career.

I just bought a house. I closed last Friday and am almost moved in completely.

I'm getting married in October to my partner of 10 years. She's my favorite person.

That's all I have. I'm the American Dream.

+I graduated from college last month with a degree in English.
-Still have another year of teacher prep, including student teaching, before I'm certified.

Congrats. Are you looking to teach English? What age group?
Thanks. I am looking to teach English, and hopefully high school.

TURN AND RUN AWAY!
(Just kidding. Sort of. That's what I teach, World Lit and American Lit. I'm about to start my third year, so I'm hoping to finally get my bearings and establish a bit of a routine. Let me know if you need anything.)

Don't put off talking about it. Both of you should outline your expectations of how you see it playing out and things that you think you will be able to handle. How long is the graduate program? What happens past that point?

I had to move about two hours south of Athens for grad school. Luckily it was a short master's program, and I finished in a year and a half. No doubt, it sucked. I went from living with my partner and seeing her daily to once every 1-2 weeks. I had school and student teaching and a job and she had a full-time job back home, so making time was tough and sometimes it just didn't happen.

It was a huge bummer, but I think it is manageable, provided you communicate regularly and you can see an end to the distance in sight (even if the end seems far away). When I graduated, I knew I was likely going to have to take the first job offered to me and I also knew that she would not move to Middle of Nowhere, Georgia. Luckily things worked out and I got a job near Athens. But they wouldn't have worked out had we not given it a chance in the first place.

+ I'm buying a house, on which I close next week! It is "the one" my partner and I fell in love with instantly. I'm psyched.
+ I'm getting married in a few months.
+ It's summer! However, I am still taking gifted endorsement classes for my job and coaching high school baseball, but still...summer. I'll even have a month after I move to get settled.

- At a time when most people would say my life is coming together quite nicely (and it is, I do not argue), my anxiety and depression has sort of hopped back onto the dance floor and made their presence known again. I've gone to doctors, I've gotten medication, and usually the medication makes me feel infinitely worse (nausea, headaches, etc.).
- The most stressful thing about this whole yuppie lifestyle is the fear that with this kind of stability comes the knowledge that I will be trapped in my current career. I hate it and I want out but I don't know what else I'm qualified to do. Year One was the worst experience of my life and everyone said "It's that way for everyone." So I changed schools and tried again. Ditto for year two. Everyone has said "You're still finding your bearings. Give it another go." I am under contract through next year and I'm willing to give it a shot, but I don't think I can teach twenty more years.
