General / Re: band you hate that everyone seems to love

Really hate The Smiths.

Strongly dislike Neutral Milk Hotel (won't use "hate" because "King of Carrot Flowers, Pt. 1").

Really, really hate Arcade Fire's music.

I'd absolutely love to come to the ATL show, but from the looks of it, it doesn't look likely. Since I started teaching, I think I may have gone to one show on a weeknight. 4:30 comes super early. I mean, granted, I suppose Dakota could just pump me full of soda and I pull an all nighter that segues into my school day. Bummer.

Either way, I really really dig your music- keep it up. The best CD of the year would just be those two EPs burned on a disc three times each.

Quit teaching forever (would probably require me to buy out the rest of my teaching contract, as well). Pay for therapy/treatment to undo as much some of the psychological damage caused by my time as a teacher. Go back to school for poli-sci. Or something, anything else.

Leave Georgia. Sell my house. Buy a house elsewhere.

Give my wife whatever she needs to start her own cat rescue-sanctuary type-ordeal and pay her to do it so she can quit her awful job at the vet's.

Congratulations, Blake. I'm happy for you. I got married back in October. Definitely a cool, surreal feeling.

Green Day's "Welcome to Paradise".

I mean,  technically, the first song I learned how to play was something in a Mel Bay chord book but the aforementioned song was the one where I was like "Oh, I can play a song now. In fact, I know how to do all that I'm ever going to need to know how to do." To be quite honest, my skill set in the past 15 years has not really advanced too awfully far beyond what I learned that first year.

As much as it embarrasses me to say it, this movie is usually on TV once every, I dunno, six hours. I usually watch it and quote the whole thing.

Wes Anderson movies in general bore me to death.
I could definitely understand this. I really like Grand Budapest Hotel. I like his movies but that was my favorite.

I have not seen it, but have been meaning to once it is convenient for me (On Demand or Netflix) because I've heard it is enjoyable even from some friends who don't normally like his movies. I don't hate the movies. But I tend to go see them in theaters because my friends love the guy and I always leave kind of annoyed.

Yikes. I hope your money situation gets better so it doesn't come down to you having to unload it, because that is something I'd want to hold onto, if only because the demand for Rics- the used market never slows down for them because there is a waiting list a mile long to get a new one.

You could offer me the LP and $800 and I still would probably walk away. If I DID choose to sell it, I'd sell it for as much as I could get and buy a guitar different than the one I would get in a trade. (I know that's easier said than done if you have an interested party...just speaking hypothetically.)

I'm extra jealous of you at the moment.

I've been trying to buy a guitar for two years, but I am having difficulty deciding/pulling the trigger, but I check daily for "deals." Are you trading for the guitar or are you trying to get rid of the guitar?

These tribute ones were roughly $900-1000ish new (they were basically a stripped-down offshoot of the Studio). For a point of reference, they did the same thing for the 2013 line (50s, 60s, 70s tribute). Used, like you've said, I've seen them all over the place, mostly between $650-750.

I don't know how this will change now that the 2015s have been released and are SUBSTANTIALLY more expensive (for example, the $2500 Standard is now $3800, the really cheap $600 "Junior" is now $1100, etc.)- some people have speculated it will drive up the demand on the older "budget" models. I would like one of the 50s models with the P90s in them. I actually enjoy the feel of the unfinished neck.

I don't know about the headstock damage and its effect on price. That's no small ding. If it's something you/other people can live with and is purely aesthetic, it's all well and good. But if I'm buying, I'd probably expect some sort of discount, if only for the hit you would take if you hypothetically try to re-sell it.

Sorry, this probably wasn't helpful.

Not that any student there would care, because they are monsters.

"let's see if we can make so-and-so have a seizure again!" *spritz* *spritz* *spritz*

I had an asthma attack after one of them decided to take a bath in Axe body spray, and judging from the laughter in the room, you'll see me on the Tonight Show shortly.

this is probs a dumb question but as a noob to the office life, would it be insane and totally unacceptable to PAINT your nails at your desk??

I don't know if it's a violation of decorum per se, but if it's crowded, I would hold off. As a teacher, I've had to straight-up go off on students for either using nail polish or spraying disgusting cologne in my room. I have asthma and it has triggered an attack more than once when I had forgotten my inhaler, but more importantly, I've had it trigger a seizure in a student in the middle of class. I have to make a huge deal out of it, but can't explicitly come out and say "Because so-and-so might have a seizure around flashing lights or strong smells". Not that any student there would care, because they are monsters.

I second the Taco Bell Cantina Bowls- it's kind of a gross slop-fest of food to look at, but it is decent enough in a pinch. A bit pricey for Taco Bell (~$5 here). If you order anything "Fresco style" at Taco Bell, the take out the cheese and sauces and put pico de gallo instead.

Steak and Shake has this "veggie melt" thing that I've had before that has mushrooms, onions, peppers, guacamole. Get it without cheese (thus negating the "melt" part of it, but hey, we don't need two creamy, fatty components on a sandwich anyways.)

Fazoli's is kind of gross but you can definitely get something vegetarian there. There are no more Fazoli's where I live and I've got to admit that I kind of miss it. Baked ziti.

General / Re: My Top 50 Horror Films From 2000 to Present
September 20, 2014, 05:52:57 AM
I reference these lists you make once every couple of weeks, probably. They are usually spot-on.

I second a ton of these on this list. My personal favorite horror movie from the past decade or so was The Descent. Not sure what is special about it because "spooky creatures in cave" initially makes me kind of roll my eyes, but not only do I think it was great, it also holds up to re-watching.

"Let the Right One In" is probably where it needs to be on the list. It is probably one of my favorite films (period).

General / Re: Hip-Hop Thread

All I know about hip-hop these days is that my students listen EXCLUSIVELY to Migos and Rich Homie Quan and it drives me crazy. "Versace" has been the jam for what, two years now? It's just horrible (in my opinion of course. To each their own, I suppose.)

Warning: don't click either video if misogyny or bad music offends you.

Also, since I am out in the boonies, THIS is highly popular around my school. No joke. I kid you not. See how long you make it through the video before you turn it off.

Athens! Very excited to hear this news. Life has gotten in the way, and I've been out of the loop for a few years with shows, so it will be a nice excuse to get out of the house.

Whenever I'm around a place with a WorldMarket, I tend to go in there and see what they are clearing out. Most recently, they had this Mint Julep flavored soda for like 25-cents apiece. Just delicious.

General / Re: what do you want out of life?
August 03, 2014, 08:17:18 PM
Like Gatsby, I want to repeat the past.

With so many people on here talking about their desire to have a career and/or to be financially stable, I'm in no real position to say anything because I have both of those things. However, I would like a steady career that I don't hate. It doesn't have to be doing something I love, just something I can live with that facilitates all the other things I hope to do in the other hours of the day.
