1. George Harrison because his sister gave my quiz bowl team money to go to National's with.
2. Ringo Starr because he was on Shining Time Station. Also, he was the funniest in Help!
3. Paul McCartney because he was slightly less of a wife beater than John Lennon.
4. Goddamn I really hate John Lennon.

In case you can't tell, I'm mostly meh on the Beatles. I like their dumb weird movies better than their actual music.

Rob and I got civil unioned last month! It was supposed to get me on his insurance but then they decided to stop covering non-federal spouses this year after we had already done it. It made my mom really happy and we had a fun day, so it was still worth it.

My mom is dying so I mostly just listen to Off With Their Heads these days because that band is like 75% about dying/dead moms.

General / Re: what i learned from comic books
November 01, 2016, 01:17:13 PM
I think that the traditional comic world is still incredibly male-run.  Most of the women in comics that I really love either do standalone graphic novels/memoirs or webcomics.

If you're looking for more traditional comics where women are involved, Kelly Sue Deconnick has several great comics.  Bitch Planet, her runs of Captain Marvel, and Pretty Deadly are all amazing.  Lumberjanes was created by and I believe has always been written and drawn by women.   Fiona Staples (from Saga) has been drawing some of the new Archie stuff.   If you haven't read/aren't reading Saga, do it.  Emma Rios is another artist who always turns out amazing work.  Unbeatable Squirrel Girl is drawn by a woman.

As standalone graphic novels, comic collections, or women who create webcomics, I am a big fan of:
Tomboy by Liz Prince/Liz Prince just in general
My Dirty Dumb Eyes by Lisa Hanawalt
Everything Julia Wertz has ever done
Kate Leth
Nimona by Noelle Stevenson
I Think I'm in Friend Love with You by Yumi Sakagawa
All of Marjane Satrapi's work
Rent Girl by Michelle Tea
Alison Bechdel
Through the Woods by Emily Carroll
All of Sophie Campbell's work (she is trans and most of her work is under the first name Ross)
Kate Beaton
Jess Fink

I have Jillian Tamaki, Maggie Thrash, and the series Lady Killer on my to read list.

Also, I hate Alan Moore because of how often he relies on rape and extreme brutality to women as a storytelling device.

It goes Dee Dee, Joey, Tommy, Marky, Johnny, Richie, Elvis, and then CJ.  CJ is at the bottom.  By like super far.

Congrats buddy!  I know this is something you were really looking forward to, so I'm super excited and happy for you.  You're going to be a great dad.

Also, Nacher is a lovely, gender neutral option.

Feel free to tell me go fuck off, but we could consider making a Facebook group. Actually get notifications when people post and respond, have it integrated into the rest of our online lives.
It would definitely kill the board for real but we'd probably all actually talk to each other a lot more.

Almost all of my other forums have done this and it has been kind of great.

I've been working the back catalog of Skeptic's Guide into my podcast rotation too!

I've gotten really hyper focused on spooky or science fiction-y audio dramas for the last two weeks because my mom is has really aggressive cancer and podcasts with a storyline and some mystery to them are like the only thing that really helps me to be able to switch from all consuming worry/anger/sadness mode to be able to focus on accomplishing things at work.  In this quest to compartmentalize, I've listened to everything currently available for and enjoyed The Bright Sessions, The Message, Archive 81, Small Town Horror, and The Bridge.  I've also listened to some of King Falls AM and liked it okay, but not as much as some others.  I'm also starting ars PARADOXICA and am pretty stoked on that.

Also, Kyle Kinane's new podcast The Boogie Monster is really fun if you like Kyle Kinane and also the paranormal and cryptids stuff.

I live in a state that always goes blue, so I have the luxury of voting third party if I want.  But Jill Stein would be the only choice there and Jill Stein's autism epidemic fear mongering and pandering to anti-vaxxers is too gross for me to consider it.

I might be filling in the bubble next to Clinton's name on the ballot in November but I am not going to like it and I am never ever going to be hashtag with her or whatever.  I'm just going to pretend that my vote is just for keeping Trump from being able to name a single Supreme Court justice, for keeping abortion safe and legal/possibly repealing the Hyde Amendment, and for science.

[[EDIT FROM JER: AH FUCK. sorry amanda, i meant to quote this post and accidentally hit "modify" instead of quote and I overwrote your post. I'm a dummy and I'm sorry. Want to edit back in your podcast list? sorry :( :( :( ]]

Let's try this again! My list is pretty long because I listen to podcasts a lot.  Like probably 25-30 hours of them a week at the very least.  I have a mostly non-phone job in a call center, so I rely on headphones drowning out 10 people all talking on the phone at once, and I find I focus better while listening to stories and stuff better than when listening to music.

My main podcast jam right now is My Brother, My Brother, and Me.  I started from the beginning two-ish months ago and am in the 160's right now.

My top two favorites are Welcome to Night Vale and Thrilling Adventure Hour.

Other stuff I keep current with:
The Black Tapes
Tanis
Lore
History of Westeros
Storm of Spoilers
Baby Geniuses
The Dead Author's Podcast (even though has dropped from monthly to occasional)
We Got This with Mark and Hal
Limetown
Sawbones
Alice Isn't Dead
Still Buffering
Unabashed Book Snobbery
The Fanwankers (only their GoT reviews)
Ronald D. Moore's Outlander Podcast
Drunk on Disney
MonsterTalk
CLONECAST (Although, I've kind of fallen behind these season because of Orphan Black running concurrent to GoT and the great big MBMBaM archive binge)

I also enjoy and/or am planning on making my way through the archives of these once I'm caught up on MBMBAM:
The JV Club with Janet Varney
Pleasuretown
Comedy Bang Bang
We're Alive
Wolf 359
Serial (I've only listened to season 1, though)
Undisclosed
Bunker Buddies
Til Death Do Us Blart
Nerdist Writer's Panel
Terrified with Dave Ross
Nerdist

Night Vale Presents just dropped a new podcast yesterday called Within the Wires that I'm also finding pretty excellent.

I would assume both of us have heard ALL.
Yep. If they were on Epitaph in the 90s, I've heard them. They aren't bad, they just always sounded like a generic version of the Descendents and I prefer the name brand. ALL were okay but not as good as the Descendents. I even loved Cool to be You.

ALL truly is the Malt-O-Meal of punk bands.

i wish we could find that google doc that has all the nice things we all wrote about each other. so much of my life has been built on connections i made through the pix boards (some bad, like moving across the country with someone i didn't know well enough or that time i dated someone who was horrible to me) but mostly it's been such a fun wild ride MY DUDES.

I had a dream recently that there was a pix board panel discussion that chris hosted and her and becca and bret and courtney and lindsey and tague were there and I was running late and crying on the bus because I didn't want to miss my internet friends.

God, yeah.  This.  Even though I was technically an adult (I think I was 20) when I joined this board, I'm really glad I got to grow up with you guys.

I've not had a chance to watch it but is The Man in the High Castle any good? I saw a commercial for it and thought it looked interesting.

We put it on a couple weeks ago while I was doing some stuff for work and what I saw was pretty good.  I've never read the book and I felt like there were some things I was missing, but Rob is a huge Philips K. Dick fan and he was absolutely engrossed in it.

I have been feeling kind of sick to my stomach about this since I heard that he was in the coma earlier this week.  I just saw him play like six weeks ago.  He was only 30-something and was so vibrant and stoked.  While I didn't know really know him personally, I have a decent number of friends in common with him and they all just absolutely adored him and it just extra sucks to watch them all hurting too.

There's a gofund me set up to help with the ICU bills and funeral costs if any one is interested in donating.  https://www.gofundme.com/c784qs38

I am finding Fear the Walking Dead pretty okay.

I recently watched all of the regular series of Miranda and really liked it a lot.

I'm also really excited that Drunk History is back, because anything that brings Craig Cackowski to the masses is wonderful.

My favorites right now are La Croix orange and Ice Mountain's Watermelon Lime.  We picked up a thing of Canada Dry raspberry because it was on sale at the store and it is also pretty good.
