General / Ghost Mice - Wake Up and Fight!
September 21, 2017, 02:31:12 PM
Let's talk about the new Ghost Mice album.  Not about Chris and what's going on with him, there's another thread for that.  Let's keep this about the music.

I'm really digging the new album, too bad it's most likely their last as this could very well be their strongest release yet.  I still need a few more spins to fully digest this thing but there are a lot of stand out tracks, Death and Hatred to Mankind, Unsinkable, I Can't Make It In The City to name a few.

Anyone else give this a listen yet?

Am I the only one that still wants to hear the new Ghost Mice album?  I pre-ordered before any of this came out and I'm hoping he makes good on the orders that were placed.

Not sure if I'm a big fan of sub categories.  It's slow enough around here that I can't see dividing what little conversation we do have into different pages.  The movement of topics on the front page recently is kind of nice.  Let's all just make it a point to post more.

Yeah, this is way too small!  None of us are too young anymore and this is hard to read.

The good news is that with these idiots who don't believe in science, we'll all be underwater in a few years anyway and none of this will matter.

Sorry to hear this.  It sucks when the people you're closest too in life hurt you.  A good friend, who had a harder life than anyone I've ever met once told me, "when things seem to be as bad as it can get, it can only get better".  I still live by that code and always remind myself when things get really shitty...it can only get better.  Don't let them take away the things you really enjoy in life, booking shows, etc.  However, if you are truly growing tired of that maybe it's time to try something new?  Only you can make that decision and a lot of it has to fall on what you're going to move forward towards.  Overall, I just wanted to say keep your head up, things will get better!

General / Re: I made a new mostly '90s hip-hop mix.

Nice mix!  There's so much classic 90's hip hop it would have been easy, and not terrible, to make a mix of hits.  You went for some deeper cuts which makes for a better listen.  Nicely done!

Really, somebody else buying it wouldn't be such a bad deal necessarily.  It's not like a lot is getting done with the label as it is now.  There is a ton of classic material on PiX that is criminally out of print.  Hell, just put digital copies of everything up on bandcamp to make it accessible.
Some PIX stuff is on Apple Music. I'd have to research to see how much of it is there.

EDIT: It's pretty sparse. They have a few albums but overall they don't have a lot. I did just add some Operation Cliff Calvin to my library. I wish I hadn't have lost my CDs that came with the little booklet and had all of their songs. I can't remember what it was called.

It just seems it would be so easy to load the entire catalog on Bandcamp to make money and please the fans at the same time.  I'm not on Apple Music but I did buy the entire OCC catalog of Bandcamp awhile back.  Not sure if it's still on there or not but it was all for sale as one download.

I'm unfamiliar with them, but I like the song posted above.  What's the best starting point, album wise, to begin?

I'm sure that at this point, everyone has heard Pat the Bunny's rap album, right?  That shit was hilariously bad.
100 Trash Bags of Weed, Breakfast All Day, and Gamers are all my jam. 100% unironically. "I'm getting higher than a vampire on fire!"
Where can I hear this?  I'm not convinced such a thing really exists but y'all have me curious now.

GG Allin is dumb shock rock for dumb idiots.
Agreed.  I don't understand how anyone beyond high school age can appreciate that garbage.

I'm just going with Phil Spector in general.  The guy ruined both Let It Be and End of the Century with his overproduction bullshit.
I actually kinda like Phil Spector girl groups. I got weird taste. With ramones this is my top 5.

1) rocket to Russia
2) leave home
3) pleasant dreams
4) end of the century
5) mondo bizzaro.

I'm all over

The Ramones have so many great albums that you can rank them a million different ways.  However, you may have the first top whatever Ramones list that didn't include the self titled.   Mondo Bizzaro is a great album.  Hell, Adios Amigos is a great album.  As a Dee Dee fan myself I'd have to include Too Tough To Die in my top 3.  That was a great album for Dee Dee.

Awesome.  Looking forward to grabbing all of this music!  Any chance of putting the out of print This Bike is a Pipe Bomb music on there?  I always thought it was depressing that not only is this music out of print but it can't be found at all without downloading illegally or somebody on ebay making a huge profit.  Dance Party With... is a classic album that the kids today should be listening to it while they grow up.  I'd love a chance to purchase those old EPs and 7"s too!

No way anyone is paying $5000 for that.  No low ball offers?  Do you even Craigslist, bro?  That was a painful read.  I think that's the guy behind a lot of the spam email I get.  CONVERSTION PEASES?  Do you even English, bro?

Agreed on the politics.  It wasn't just an album of fuck this and fuck that.  The liner notes really explained the causes and the deeper meaning of the songs and politics.  At a time when information wasn't as readily available as it is today this was a great introduction into a lot of political ideas that I still believe in now.

One of the best records of all time! It would be sick, although unlikely, if they did a 20th anniversary tour where they played the whole record.
Agreed, but I think only half the lineup from that period is even in the band anymore if they're even still together.  Less Talk probably shaped me more as a person than any other record ever.  I couldn't have asked for a better album to shape my impressionable teenage mind.

Omaha, NE...check out Lookout Lounge.  New-ish venue in town that has been booking a lot of rad shows.

the grateful dead wrote amazing songs. it's the endless fucking noodling and un-epic jams that suck. the straight up songs, I can list a whole bunch, are really catchy and cool. I grew up listening to them, my dad was a huge deadhead so I got a soft spot.. touch of grey, friend of the devil (my band used to do a snotty cover of that), uncle johns band.. the list goes on. if they were a straight foward, verse chorus verse type band they'd be so much better and get shit on less..

but what they spawned? jam bands are the worst
I agree, they were great songwriters and could write some catchy ass tunes.  I dig the un-epic jams too though.  When they really get into a groove it sounds like some spaced out free jazz at times and I'm into that shit.  Totally agree on the jam bands.  That shit just doesn't do anything for me.  The dead were such great musicians and had such great chemistry that they could just improvise and play off each other and it stayed interesting.  These modern day bands can't do that.  I was at a music festival with Trey from Phish years back and I thought I'd at least give it a chance and check it out.  It was like one endless Trey guitar solo.  I didn't last long before I moved onto something more interesting.

I'm sure I'm the only one, the only one willing to openly admit it anyway.  I enjoy the Grateful Dead(hands in punk rock cred card).  I've always enjoyed weird outsider type music.  I listen to a lot of free jazz that most people would just consider noise.  When the Dead get on those long improv jams they get into some pretty left field shit that nobody else was doing at the time and it gets pretty improv jazzy.  I dig that shit.  I've lived in several houses over the years with 30+ people and they were often a mix of punks and hippies.  These groups aren't really all that different aside from musical taste.  I'm not into the modern jam band scene and that crap but I dig me some Grateful Dead.

The only Black Flag I listen to these days is First Four Years.  In fact, now that I'm thinking of it, the only Black Flag I've ever listened to regularly is First Four Years.  Rollins ruined Black Flag.  Damaged is often regarded as the best Black Flag album but if you look at the song credits, Rollins didn't write any of them.

How are you out of towners getting there?  I'm looking at logistics of going and it's either a 10 hour drive or a flight into Indianapolis(I'm guessing is the closest airport?).  The drive would probably be cheaper with gas prices being fairly low right now.

I've been listening to a lot of the Taxpayers recently.  This is some next level shit.  So many different genres and so complex.  I don't see myself ever getting tired of this.  After rocking the fuck out of To Risk So Much... I started looking into the rest of their catalog.  Got the God Forgive These Bastards book which I just started reading and I'm looking forward to pairing with the album of the same name.  Such a great concept.
