It sucks, I really like the idea of online spaces controlled and maintained by the community that uses them. But the convenience of Facebook's one-stop-socializing has made it kind of a hard sell to get people to keep participating.

this isn't Jerkemy Calls Out The Descendents; both bands were huge for me growing up and Bill Stevenson is probably my favorite drummer

but I mean...dude was 33 when he wrote

Quote

He's a total dick; that's the truth, and you know I'm right.
From everything you say, there's no way he'll ever do you right.

You love a man who treats you wrong.
You think you'll change him, but you're wrong.
He'll use you; then, he'll say, "So long."
After all he's said and all he's done-

I'm the one; I've been here for you all along.
I'm the one whose shoulder you've been cryin' on.

I'm the one who wants you more than anything;
You don't feel the same way-you've made it clear to me,
But I'll stand my ground and maybe
You'll hear what I've been sayin'.

After all I've said and all I've done-

I mean c'mon

sure, a solid chunk of it

but I don't think there's a ton of equivalence between like, Bad Religion using unfortunate slavery metaphors to describe suburban life when they were 15, and Milo continuing to write songs from what legitimately sounds like a stalker's POV into his 40s

both bands are formative and classic for me too but honestly their entire catalogs in retrospect are so saturated with "i know what's best for you/why did you friendzone me/you'll regret it" proto-MRA creepiness that a lot of it's hard to enjoy now

I forget if the first or second 10 Foot Pool singer was the better one.
The first. Scott was better. He went on to form Pulley who I prefer to 10 foot pole, though 10 foot pole were good with Scott. He played Major League Baseball

I dunno, I kinda like that Dennis guy; he has a weird distinctive voice. Always thought the Pulley guy was a fine singer but kinda bland.

i know it's not literally thousands of miles, it's just way further than like, Boston to Providence or whatever

The thing is, cities on the west coast are so much more spread out than on the east coast that if you're driving on tour, you're going to have to play a bunch of small towns. I took it for granted when I lived on the east coast how easy it was to hit a different major city per day on tours. Here it's like Vancouver BC (if you all have passports), Seattle, Portland (thousands of miles) San Francisco, Los Angeles.

I say we keep the board up. Maybe we can start doing more informal "pix board" hang outs?

I'd be down to lay in some grass by the mountains near a stream or something for a day or two in the summer.

i mean this has basically been a general punk rock message board the whole time anyway; I see no reason to take it down now

Shit, this board really IS mean. I guess I just don't understand the internet or messageboard culture. I'm never coming back.

I'm not mad at Aaron; we don't even need to shake hands. He should continue to post here if he wants. This is contentious stuff and people need to be OK with sarcastic pushback if they post videos by noted misogynist reactionaries is all. This is the normal back and forth of internet message boards. It's fine. It's punk rock. Who gives a shit? I didn't think anyone would leave the board over it. I'm not even really an admin except technically, nothing I say fuckin matters.

I wasn't addressing any one poster, I was just scattershot editorializing about some of the topics in the thread. I didn't mean to make anyone quit the board.

Also jeez, if this little pushback makes you pack up and leave i dunno how you expect to argue on the internet

They don't mean the same thing at all, because words have history and connotations.

Look I'm not trying to be a dick (well, not TOO much) or run you off the board. I've just been on the internet long enough that I have an immediate and uncontrollable full-body eye-roll at this whole "I'm gonna use a provocative reactionary term like SJW and link a bunch of videos from a known anti-feminist neoreactionary, and then when people have negative reactions, I'll go all Spock and accuse them of logical fallacies" thing.

This shit has context and history, it doesn't exist in a vacuum. Either you don't understand this, in which case you aren't quite the philosopher-king you present yourself as, or you don't care, in which case you ARE being a dick. Either way, it doesn't open the floor for anything productive. Ever notice that almost nobody ever responds to your threads? Yeah, that's not a coincidence.

jesus, for a Being of Pure Logic concerned that people are being coddled by trigger warnings, you're unbelievably sensitive

like no, seriously.... Sargon and his #GamerGate crew, who went absolutely nuclear because of an article with the obviously metaphorical and quite-well-explained-if-they'd-bothered-to-read-it headline "Gamers" Are Dead" is now trying to make a career of telling other people they're too sensitive?

I mean, I know you want us to engage with this bullshit academically but like....I can't stop laughing long enough

I wonder what the crossover is on people gnashing their teeth about both trigger warnings and movie spoilers

Trigger warnings aren't censorship, they're used on material that is being taught. If the material were being censored there wouldn't be warnings, the material would be, you know, censored. 98% of this "college students are demanding censorship" stuff is mostly just a new front in the ancient traditional "college campuses are lie-beral hotbeds" thing used to try and shut up Vietnam War dissent.  The other 2% is college kids sometimes being dopey, which isn't a big new existential threat, it's actually been around for awhile. "SJW" is just a new term for "Politically Correct" now that most people finally recognize "PC" as racist grandpa talk.

and that "Sargon of Akkad" guy is a stupid piece of shit who's only proved that Americans will think any steaming garbage is deep if you say it in a British accent

like, just before turfing out, people who you can absolutely tell have the exact same communication issues in real life are always like "This is the MEANEST BOARD ONLINE, I don't get this SNARKY NTERNET CULTURE" but like....go look at any other messageboard. This place is the most milquetoast, no-stakes, lackadaisically-policed, let's-be-online-pals-fest on the entire internet.

my first joke was about the seemingly scripted absurdity of replying to a comment about mansplaining with a wall of text attempting to take a stranger through a bunch of typo-ridden formal logic over a throwaway comment. It's the literal definition of mansplaining.

I don't think I've ever banned anyone In 7 years of being an admin here. I think the only time I've ever used my admin powers was to filter the term "lady love" to appear as "Broseph" for Brett.

Some variation of this argument has come up over and over here and I think all it boils down to is new posters not bothering to take the temperature of the room or look at the history of the board before unleashing. Nobody disagrees with you that logic is important, it's the context that makes your response absurd, at least to me.

Sorry, you're just not gonna find a lot of people in any society at any time on any planet who are going to respond favorably to being condescendingly dragged through the Socratic method over an offhand comment. That's not a snarky messageboard thing, it's just life.

blackface can be important and necessary envelope-pushing, but you "don't think our species will last" after a joke about being banned from a messageboard

I laughed. Didn't say it was bad, it just didn't practically kill me like original Mr. Show did. I dunno if anything could live up to the anticipation.
