Title: Music that you like that you assume people on the board hate
Post by: BlakeK on March 01, 2016, 07:17:21 PM
I've been listening to a lot of metal from the 90s and early 00s lately. I didn't know what to call this thread, I just want to talk about how cool Pantera were and how I have been listening to Slipknot this evening....and enjoying it! I loved Slipknot when their first album came out and thought Iowa was a great album as well. While not as great as I remember, I still find a lot of the music I liked when I was 16 or 17 enjoyable. Banda like the Deftones, Tool, Nine Inch Nails, Marilyn Manson, and the like we're so awesome when I was younger and I like to throw them on along with the typical 90s grunge that I always go on about. Does or did anyone like the type of music I'm talking about? Do people understand that the above bands were not on the same low level as Limp Bizkit, Nickelback, Trapt, Hoobastank, Staind, and the like? I will admit I was into Staind when they first came out and as is the case with a lot of the music I listened to then, I can't listen to them now. I always loved punk music and can listen to nearly all of the punk bands now that I listened to then.

Live, particulary the obligatory lightning crashes heh
Bush (machinehead, glycerine.. still can bump them)
Blink 182
GG Allins acoustic outlaw country stuff
philip glass (i doubt a composer counts as a band.)
I still have a soft spot for some "post rock" (jesus christ i've always felt like such a douche saying that) bands

I get into prog stuff a whole lot, and used to listen to Phish tons back in high school. I could probably still enjoy it, honestly.

All things considered, for how much of a fan of music I am and how much of my life is spent thinking about music, I have pretty awful taste.

I really enjoy turntablism. Like Q-bert, or even experimental folks like Christian Marclay.  I'm fascinated by the use of a playback device as an instrument.  It is like hacking and jazz.

I also like FRNTRNNR, but i think it is because they are such failures at self-promotion and anything that has to do with being a band. I mean, their music sounds good under water and that's about it.

I had so many nine inch nails shirts in junior high and high school. It wasn't because they were my favorite band (though they were great) they just had really awesome shirts. My favorite back then was one that had the NIN in lower case letters and said "now I'm nothing". I was good at being a depressed goth/grunge kid in junior high. I dropped the goth stuff in high school and went with a grunge/punk combo.

Nine Inch Nails were awesome, though. It was my goal to have all of the "halos" but living in a small town pre-Internet made that an impossible task. If you know what I mean by halos, you are definitely old and cool at the same time.

I liked System of a Down when they first came out. I remember being on acid with some friends driving along aimlessly in the middle of the nigh and Sugar came on the radio unedited. Everyone loved it.

Tool put on the best concert I've ever seen. Trippiest shit I've ever seen in person.

i will do my best at making a semi-relevant long story short..

so Tool. so yeah, i had this super rich junkie friend for a bit. he snapped his fingers, mommy bought him a brownstone in brooklyn, etc. moving on. anyhow, his family were "dead heads", super into acid and only got the purest. The fridge was filled with visine bottles of liquid,  they also had saved a batch of the Owley Stanley acid which was only broken out on the rarest of occasions. barely a hit had me, well, you know what acid does and if you don't, you don't. but it was a few sheets, all drawn and illustrated by Maynard. It was so beautiful I wanted to frame it but of course we gobbled it up and bumped Sober.

still ill..

I think it was mandatory to have Lives Throwing Copper as a teen in the 90s. I was always "meh" with Blink 182 but I think it was due to my age. Green Day occupies that place in my heart.

What a weird genre that early 2000's Warped Tour Christian Rock/ Rap/ Nu-Metal/ Emo scene was. Although, the contemporary Warped Tour Christian Metalcore/ Emo scene is just as bizarre. Warped Tour is just weird I guess.

I don't think anyone has mentioned Sublime yet. Sublime were awesome. I still love listening to them. I know they got hijacked by "bros" and hippies but they were terrific nonetheless. I'm not down with the Sublime with Rome shit. That leads me to my next old man, finger wagging thread....

Oh I owned Live Through This and had a recorded cassette of Pretty On the Inside. I quit listening to Hole relatively quickly once it became clear to me that she killed Kurt. Most people I hung out with believed that. They may still believe it. I think there is definitely something fishy about the whole thing. I won't get into that, though. Most people I knew believed Kurt wrote part if not most of Live Through This. Conspiracy theories in the 90s didn't require much evidence for people to believe them. Maybe that's not changed but at least now people try to present evidence, flawed as it may be much of the time.

The Gin Blossoms were one of those bands that people pretended not to like but knew most of the words and wouldn't change the radio if they were on. The Farside song sounds like a cross between the above song and this one:

You see, back in the day the cooler, harder music was on MTV while the lighter, safer music was on VH-1. The Gin Blossoms were about as hard as VH-1 got. 120 Minutes was a show on MTV Sunday night from like midnight until 2. I used to record it every Sunday. I discovered a lot of cool bands on that show. They need to have something like that for kids nowadays. I feel like even though there are bands available from anywhere to anyone at all times, there needs to be a spotlight for bands that don't get much radio play. Maybe I'm just out of touch.

i try to talk about this to people but they laugh it off and say how they thought that when they were in middle school but if you actually dig into it a bit, as you said, it's certainly pretty fucking "fishy"

i also heard that thing about him writing live through this. everything about the album, even the lyrics and song structure is very similiar to kurts.. of course she could of been influenced by him, "inspired" what have you, but i doubt that too.

I'm sure I'm the only one, the only one willing to openly admit it anyway.  I enjoy the Grateful Dead(hands in punk rock cred card).  I've always enjoyed weird outsider type music.  I listen to a lot of free jazz that most people would just consider noise.  When the Dead get on those long improv jams they get into some pretty left field shit that nobody else was doing at the time and it gets pretty improv jazzy.  I dig that shit.  I've lived in several houses over the years with 30+ people and they were often a mix of punks and hippies.  These groups aren't really all that different aside from musical taste.  I'm not into the modern jam band scene and that crap but I dig me some Grateful Dead.

the grateful dead wrote amazing songs. it's the endless fucking noodling and un-epic jams that suck. the straight up songs, I can list a whole bunch, are really catchy and cool. I grew up listening to them, my dad was a huge deadhead so I got a soft spot.. touch of grey, friend of the devil (my band used to do a snotty cover of that), uncle johns band.. the list goes on. if they were a straight foward, verse chorus verse type band they'd be so much better and get shit on less..

but what they spawned? jam bands are the worst

No thanks dude my dial up is too slow. Besides, every time I start listening to or downloading a song, the phone rings and fucks everything up.

Seriously though, is there a central site or YouTube channel that kids check out daily that exposes them to music they may not have heard of or sought out? If you know what you're looking for it is easy but it can be hard to find good stuff without some guidance. Where is Matt Pinfield?

I agree, they were great songwriters and could write some catchy ass tunes.  I dig the un-epic jams too though.  When they really get into a groove it sounds like some spaced out free jazz at times and I'm into that shit.  Totally agree on the jam bands.  That shit just doesn't do anything for me.  The dead were such great musicians and had such great chemistry that they could just improvise and play off each other and it stayed interesting.  These modern day bands can't do that.  I was at a music festival with Trey from Phish years back and I thought I'd at least give it a chance and check it out.  It was like one endless Trey guitar solo.  I didn't last long before I moved onto something more interesting.

There's a lot of music that I used to listen to while smoking weed and dropping acid in high school that I might not listen to now but I never was into the Grateful Dead no matter what drugs I was on. Except Casey Jones of course. I'm looking at Grateful Dead songs and I liked Friend of the Devil and a few others. I totally forgot about some of their songs.
