I reference these lists you make once every couple of weeks, probably. They are usually spot-on.

I second a ton of these on this list. My personal favorite horror movie from the past decade or so was The Descent. Not sure what is special about it because "spooky creatures in cave" initially makes me kind of roll my eyes, but not only do I think it was great, it also holds up to re-watching.

"Let the Right One In" is probably where it needs to be on the list. It is probably one of my favorite films (period).

My co-worker keeps telling me the conjuring is the best horror film ever.
I think I couldn't stand cabin fever.
28 days later was great.
I haven't seen most of these, I'd like to though.
I also hear antichrist was great I think.

28 days later was great.

one of my all time favorites. ashame most people i talk about it seem to completely miss the social commentary and philosophy in it, not that its in depth or anything, just enough to be there without getting in the way (like the original dawn of the dead).

in reference to Brett's list, is Ginger Snaps really that good? i have been aching and aching for an awesome werewolf movie and my brother says its great but I haven't had a chance to check it out yet. im going to try to make a list myself but it won't be as in depth as brett's

I'd put Ginger Snaps right behind American Werewolf in London as far as werewolf movies go.

There aren't very many good werewolf movies though.

In no particular order

28 days Later 5/5

Shadow of the Vampire 3.5/5 (a horror art film that seems like the director and actors were all very passionate about)

BrotherHood of the Wolf 4/5 for awesomeness. dialogue can be crap at times, don't know if thats because some things are lost in translation. but the good stuff of this movie are awesome to the flossom. i want to watch it now kinda just talking about it

Dagon 3/5  really 2/5 but not bad for a lovecraftian film. amateur director and actors but were really into it. Saw it first time while tripping hard on DXM and it freaked me the fuck out

Session 9 - 4/5 If you haven't seen this movie you should. No other film builds suspense and atmosphere better than this, classic style. i personally don't think there was anything supernatural in this film *at all * other people see it differently. i think what most people see as supernatural stuff was really just a good director building atmosphere by creeping you out. you decide!

Bubba Ho-Tep - 3/5 you've got bruce campbell as Elvis fighting an ancient mummy directed and written by Phantasm director Don Coscarelli. What's not to like?

John Dies at the End - 5/5 speaking of Don, I LOVED this film. i think its hit or miss with some people, definitely postmodern blend of genres simlarly to Cabin in the Woods

Cabin in the Woods 4/5 just great great great. I actually thought it would suck but it didn't

43. Tucker & Dale Vs. Evil (2010) copy pasted from brett cause im on quick reply and not being quick about it. 4/5 one of the best comedy-horror satires out there

Shaun of the Dead 4/5 Need i say more?

The Grudge 0/5 this list is for movies i like but i wanted to mention this one because i really, really hated this movie.

Saw - 3/5 first time original was pretty good and different. plus cary elwes (AS YOU WISH.......)

30 Days of Night 2/5. not bad really. if you haven't seen it and have the ability to for free, it was an enjoyable movie. Plus alaska. Plus vampires that aren't all hot and having sex but instead want to rip out your veins and are all nosferatu, i prefer that.

Grindhosue Planet of Terror 2.5/5 maybe 3. Deathproof 4/5 maybe 4.5  I just thought deathproof was so unique and original. one of quentin's best honestly, if a bit dull compared to his other films (according to some people, but not me) Planet of Terror was fun

The Mist - 4/5. best non hollywood ending evar

Diary of the Dead 2/5 oh george...you lost it bro

Midnight Meat Train - 3/5 but enjoyable really and creepy and has a little lovecraftian element to it, which i love lovecraft, so you know. plus good actors really pull it together.

The Happening - 3/5. yep, i liked it. sue me

Drag me to Hell -3/5 old school plot done post 2000s. kinda cool, kinda not, kinda cheesy in a good way, fun and enjoyable but wouldn't watch a second time

Zombieland 3.5/4 - fun times

Stake Land 4.5/5 This movie is a must see. Low budget, but passionate and amazing acting and cinematagraphy and just a damn good job. the equivalent to a diy or lofi band rocking it out super awesome. one of the top 5 best of post 2000s i think

Fright Night remake 3/5 not too bad. actually enjoyable. one of the few remakes i've seen. just haven't gotten around to most because, you know, they're remakes

Spider 3.5/5 Its david Cronenberg. very psychological. very dark surreal yet still connected to reality. one of my favorite directors. not his best but certainly worhty of mention

I hated Antichrist. I'm not a huge Lars Von Trier fan, though.

But the answer is Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The answer is always Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

Considering the blanket statement, I'm gonna go ahead and assume you haven't seen a lot of them.  Cool, rebellious opinion, bro! Fuck new horror movies, yeah!

It's real hip to disregard twenty years of film. You must really know your stuff.

I've seen over 33 of the ones you listed. I also have been collecting and watching horror movies for 15 years. Last I counted I have at least 2,000 of them. But yeah, my opinion is stupid.

I've been reading this board for awhile but I made an account to comment on this.

I've been obsessively watching every post 2000 horror movie for the past few months.  Dunno why, never really watched horror before.  Anyway here's my list.

Also, has anyone watched Marble Hornets? Is it worth watching?

Here's the thing. Horror movies are great but rarely do they make me actually feel scared. I don't know why but lately I've had this unyielding desire to feel afraid. So my first list is movies that are scary (There's only a few)

Scary
1. Grave Encounters
2.The Last Exorcism
3. The Ring
4. Sinister
5. Grave Encounters 2
6. Oculus
7. VHS
8. Most Twilight Zone Episodes
9. Posession
10. Dark Skies

Horror[/b] (not really in order)
1. The Loved Ones
2. May
3. The Girl Next Door
4. The Lost
5. Cheap Thrills
6. Resolution
7. All Cheerleaders Die
8. The Purge
9. Insidious
10. VHS 2.
11. Mama
12.  Under the Skin
13. Hostel 1
14. Hostel 2
15. Bram Stokers Dracula
16. The Awakening
17. The Exorcism of Emily Rose
18. Rec/ Quarantine
19. Audition

I need more though. Will definitely make use of the above list.
Anyone have more horror that really scares you?

Post by: Anna Karina on October 01, 2014, 03:43:55 AM
Once again, sorry 'bout earlier.

Off work now so I'll try and go a bit further into detail about what I enjoy in horror films. What tends to interest me the most is when a film can utilize elements of horror to depict a horrifying event or events.  By that, I don't necessarily mean something actually scary, but rather something that could/does happen or that strikes a particular fear and causes anxiety.

Which is why I added films that people could argue aren't really horror films (Snowtown, Zodiac, Edmond, Under the Skin, etc). For the most part, Snowtown is a straight up drama, but it's realistic portrayal of death and manipulation is far more frightening and interesting to me than something like, say, Paranoid Activity. There's hardly any violence actually depicted in the film, but its dread and uneasiness is a lot closer to films like Texas Chainsaw Massacre than most horror films.

Vinyan's another example of that.

I understand that a lot of people don't find enjoyment in those kinds of films and would rather have something more funny/entertaining, but I think humor is a copout for most horror films.  Almost everything seems to be a comedy horror now and it's become so overdone at this point.  A lot like most torture porn.

It's so hard to find a good original horror film, but that just makes stumbling across something like Sleep Tight more memorable to me.  I don't know that I would necessarily categorize them as "scary," but to me the ones that come as close to it recently are Kidnapped, Sleep Tight, Inside, [rec], Audition.

I'm probably rambling and everything I said is stupid as hell so I'm gonna go ahead and end it with this sentence right

here.

I totally get you. I don't always need a film to be scary, that's why I made the two lists, it's just sometimes and especially lately, I crave it, it's weird.  Grave Encounters is the scariest I've seen.

While I enjoy it I feel there have been a lot of horror movies lately that use some kind of horror theme as a metaphor for teen angst or puberty. It's cool but it's becoming a trope I think.

I've been meaning to watch Snowtown and Deadgirl.

Oh, you know what is great Anna, Jugface!  I really recommend it.  Completely unique.  Also The Last Exorcism from an acting standpoint is incredible.

woo hoo! i hope i inspired that decision.
Yeah, I would always confuse the title with Army of Darkness for some reason and be like "oh yeah, I've seen that."

It would make a good double feature with Possession for a Sam Neill movie night.

did you end up with the double feature?

I haven't seen Possession since i was 14 or 15 (about 15 years ago) i remember it really creeping me out but the only visual memory i have of it is Sam Neil sitting in a chair by the window all alone and having this look on his face, a combination of fear and sadness that's very intense. intense enough that having seen it only once since a kid its engrained in my mind. very freaky

I watched Aja's newest movie Horns tonight (starring the Harry Potter dude). It was aight. Not the best but was pretty entertaining for the most part, just fell apart towards the end.

Now watching ABCs of Death 2 which I know I'll hate.

Going back to this. You should revisit it. Mondo-Vision did a phenomenal job with the transfer (which is good considering it took them half a decade working on it). Sam Neil is great in it (and I love that scene you mentioned) but Isabelle Adjani steals the show. And they're mostly not horror, but I highly recommend checking out some of Andrzej Żuławski other movies, too.  One of the most underrated directors of all time, in my opinion.

ABCs of Death 2 segments that weren't awful fuckin' garbage:

D is for Deloused (Robert Morgan)
W is for Wish (Steven Kostanski)
X is for Xylophone (Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo)
Z is for Zygote (Chris Nash)

The awfullest of garbage:

L is for Legacy (Lancelot Imasuen)
P is for P-P-P-P SCARY! (Todd Rohal)
S is for Split (Juan Martinez Moreno) (technically well made but the "twist" is offensively bad)
T is for Torture Porn (Jen and Sylvia Soska)

The rest is mostly unmemorable dreck.

It's weird because all throughout the movie I was like "I'm not sure there's any way I see myself coming out of this movie liking it/ not taking issue with it"

then it ended and both those things were true.  It was well executed maybe even meaningful in the end?

I'm watching Sushi Girl now and The Woman later.

I've seen over 33 of the ones you listed. I also have been collecting and watching horror movies for 15 years. Last I counted I have at least 2,000 of them. But yeah, my opinion is stupid.

seriously, have you seen Monsters? you can't get a better, well written, sci-fi horror that's actually a character piece filmed in cinema verite style and so honest and true to its characters

weird question...i want to watch possession... but how do i do so without buying it or torrenting it? it just occured to me that there is no such thing as video rental anymore. redbox is only new movies.... what happens when you want to rent an old movie. is torrents the only way?

I'm willing to bet there are no rental stores/streaming sites that have the Mondo-Vision remaster of it, and the old copies look like complete shit so even if you did find those copies I wouldn't recommend them. Torrent or buying is probably the only way.

The Loved Ones and Angst are the only movies on the list I had seen before this month, aside from scattered scenes here and there for some others.

I kinda really hope the new season of Twin Peaks is based more on Fire Walk With Me than the TV show. So much creepier and also David Bowie.

I'm not Brett but here's mine
1. I bought a vampire motorcycle
2. Psycho Pike
3. The Stuff
4. Troll 2
5. Woodchipper Massacre
6. Bad Taste
7. Teen Alien
8. Bloodsuckers from Outer Space
9. Octaman
10. Attack of the Beast Creatures

Still not sure I could pick even 10 horror movies after the year 2000 I enjoy, but I could maybe do a top 5 if I thought about it really hard.

Off the top of my head...

Rock n' Roll Nightmare
Maximum Overdrive
Phantom of the Mall: Eric's Revenge
Death Spa
Birdemic
Ebola Syndrome (warning: problematic movie)
Shredder Orpheus

That's all I got for now.

I'm gonna throw in For Y'ur Height Only even though it's not a horror film.

And The Crippled Masters.

Are you naming movies since 2000 that have been good?

Because the wickerman remake was one of the worst things I have ever seen. If you are talking about the original wickerman than yes, yes and yes. Absolute classic, some of the best atmosphere in that film.

Original is flawless.. the narrative unfolds like if a carpet could take acid  (hypothetically ) and rolled out. At the apex when the people pop up with the animal masks rules. I get chilld when I watch that cinematic masterfuckimg piece
